IU India Studies announces its lecture series

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This fall's India Studies lecture series at Indiana University will again bring leading political, art and cultural scholars of India and South Asia to the IU Bloomington campus, including some who already are based here.

The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will begin on Friday (Sept. 19) with a presentation by John McLeod, professor and chair of history at the University of Louisville. McLeod will speak on the topic "Victorian India and the British Monarchy" at 5:30 p.m. at the India Studies House (825 E. 8th St.).

Other events in the series will include:

  • Sept. 24 -- "Constitutionalism and Judicial Review in Divided Societies (also the Branigan Lecture)," by Pratap Mehta, president of the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, India, at noon in the Faculty Conference Room on the third floor of the IU School of Law--Bloomington. The lecture is co-sponsored by the IU Institute for Advanced Study and the Center for Constitutional Democracy.
  • Oct. 3 -- "Colonialism and Nationalism in South Asia: Perspectives from Multiple Disciplines," a roundtable discussion featuring Ashish Chadha, professor of anthropology and film at Yale University; Michael S. Dodson, IU professor of history; Adi Hastings, professor of anthropology at the University of Iowa; Brian Hatcher, professor of religion at Illinois Wesleyan University; and Javed Majeed, professor of post-colonial studies at Queen Mary University of London. The presentaiton will begin at 5 p.m. at India Studies House.
  • Oct. 10 -- "Yoga Today: Reflections on Sexuality and the Politics of Knowledge," by Joseph Alter, professor and chair of anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. at India Studies House.
  • Oct. 24 -- The Hrishikesh and Sailabala Bhattacharya Memorial Lecture, "The Beauty of Compromise: Political Reconciliation in South Asia," by Ramachandra Guha, an environmental author, historian and biographer from Bangalore, India. It will begin at 5 p.m. in the President's Room of the University Club, in the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. Seventh St.
  • Nov. 7 -- "The Art of Dress in Modern India," by Pravina Shukla, IU associate professor of folklore, Indiana University, at 5:30 p.m. at India Studies House.
  • Nov. 14 -- "Migration, Minorities and Diaspora Politics: The Sociolinguistic Story of Kashmiri," by Rakesh Bhatt, associate professor of linguistics and director of the Program in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education at the University of Illinois. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. at India Studies House.
