Important admissions application deadline coming up at IU

For maximum consideration regarding merit-based scholarships, potential IU Bloomington students must apply by Nov. 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington admissions officials are reminding high school students applying for 2009 fall admission to IU that an important deadline is quickly approaching. In order to receive maximum consideration for many merit-based scholarships, applications for admission must be completed and in the mail by the Nov. 1 deadline.

It is increasingly important for high schools seniors to be aware of and adhere to admissions deadlines, especially in light of this fall's record-setting enrollment in Bloomington, said Roger Thompson, vice provost for enrollment management at IU.

"We are attracting more Indiana high school students, including a larger share of those most academically gifted, and our applications from outside of Indiana also have increased," he said. "Our freshman class for fall 2008 was the largest in history, and an enormous factor in this phenomenon, I believe, has been the additional and more generous financial aid and scholarship programs IU has made available to Hoosier students.

"We are proud that we have been able to do this, and are thrilled with the respect and enthusiasm that high school students in Indiana are showing to IU," Thompson continued. "But increased popularity also means increased competition for admission and financial aid. Also, I anticipate that we will not be able to admit as many students next fall because we cannot accommodate these large numbers year-after-year."

Thompson, who noted that applications to attend IU Bloomington have increased by more than 10,000 over the past four years, urged students who hope to go to IU in the future to pay close attention to all admissions deadlines.

"I would say to students, 'don't wait around if you want to go to IU.'" Thompson said. "I believe that we are seeing a trend that is not going to level off soon."
