Provost Hanson announces searches to fill two vice provost positions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 16, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson announced that nominations and applications are being accepted for two new positions: Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

For each position, the successful candidate will be a tenured member of the IU Bloomington faculty who has achieved full rank. The deadline for submitting nominations and applications is Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The full-time positions, scheduled to begin Jan. 1, 2009, are being created as part of a restructuring of campus administration by placing two broad functions of the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties under the leadership of the two vice provosts.

The Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs will provide leadership on issues relating to academic appointments and policies, including faculty recruitment and retention, tenure and promotion, diversity, faculty development and mediation. She or he will also serve as an advocate for scholarly excellence, academic freedom, collegiality and faculty governance.

The VPFAA will oversee the process for academic appointments, manage the tenure and promotion process for the Provost's office, oversee the annual cycle of reviews for tenure-probationary faculty, lead programs and initiatives for faculty recruitment and retention, develop career programs and help create a supportive, family-friendly climate for faculty.

The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education will lead programs and initiatives in support of outstanding academic experiences for all IU Bloomington undergraduates. Responsibilities will include leadership on undergraduate curricular policies and encouragement and support for innovation in the curriculum.

The VPUE will chair the Campus Curriculum Committee, implement and manage the IU Bloomington General Education Initiative and work collaboratively with school deans on initiatives to enhance undergraduate education, including opportunities for students to work with faculty on research and participate in community-based learning and leadership activities.

Each position is a 12-month appointment, with the expectation of a three-to-five-year initial appointment, renewable.

Search and screen committees have been appointed for both positions. Kurt Zorn, professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, will chair the committee for the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs. Bennett Bertenthal, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will chair the committee for the Vice President for Undergraduate Education. Applications and nominations may be submitted to the chairs through the Oncourse Web site at vpfaasearch@oncourse.iu.edu and vpuesearch@oncourse.iu.edu.
