Patents in a global economy, an end to AIDS among topics at annual program at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis on Oct. 11 will host Teresa Stanek Rea, deputy director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and John McGoldrick, chairman of Zimmer Holdings, along with other legal experts in health law and ethics as part of the school's annual Continuing Legal Education Program.

Rea is speaking on "Navigating the 21st Century Patents Terrain In a Global Innovation Economy" and McGoldrick, who serves as special adviser on the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, will speak on "The End of AIDS -- When? How?"

"Our annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Program strives to provide timely topics of interest by well-known experts in the government, private sector and the academy," said law professor Andy Klein, who will moderate the program. "We think this year's lineup is one of the best we have had, which is saying a lot, since we have had some top-notch talent over the years."

The one-day event, which costs $250 to attend, is open to the public and will be held at the law school, in the Wynne Courtroom and Conour Atrium, Inlow Hall, at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The program, "Health Law Developments and Trends," offers six hours of Indiana CLE credit, including one hour of ethics credit.

The morning schedule will feature Rea, who is deputy undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property, as well as second in command at the U.S. Patent Office. In addition, there will be a session on "Foreign Corrupt Practices Act -- Where We Are and Where the Government is Going" by Tim Pratt, executive vice president, chief administrative officer, general counsel and secretary for Boston Scientific, and Ralph Hall, Distinguished Professor & Practitioner, University of Minnesota School of Law. Nicolas P. Terry, the Chester A. Myers Professor of Law at Saint Louis University School of Law will speak on "Electronic Medical Records: Flavors of Regulation, From Privacy, Meaningful Use, and Products Liability to Device Regulation."

In the afternoon, Mary Davis, the Stites and Harbison Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law, will speak on "Federal Preemption of State Law: The Supreme Court's Moving Target." She will be followed by McGoldrick, who will speak on patent, regulatory and contract issues involved in finding a way to stop the AIDS virus. Rounding out the day will be G. Michael Witte of the Indiana Disciplinary Commission, who will present his "Update of Indiana Lawyer Discipline Cases.

The annual event was was inaugurated in 2002 and has raised more than $156,000 for student scholarships.

"We are extremely proud that this program is able to provide quality continuing legal education to attorneys from Indianapolis and around the country, while also assisting current law students through scholarship support," said Jim Burns, 1975 graduate of the law school, senior counsel at Ice Miller LLP and former assistant general counsel of Eli Lilly and Company. He is the founding organizer of the program. "It's a win-win for the legal community and the law school."
