Indiana University joins national Student Success Collaborative

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University is strengthening its programs for increasing college completion rates by joining the Student Success Collaborative, an initiative of the Education Advisory Board. Of the 35 institutions of higher education who are participating in the collaborative, IU is the only multi-campus university to join the collaborative as an entire system.

The Education Advisory Board, a well-respected national research and consulting firm, provides best practice and custom research to more than 1,000 colleges and universities in the areas of academic affairs, student affairs, business affairs, continuing and online education, and advancement.

The steering committee for the Student Success Collaborative at IU includes John Applegate, executive vice president for university regional affairs, planning and policy; Lauren Robel, provost of IU Bloomington and executive vice president of Indiana University; and Nasser Paydar, executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer at IUPUI. Every IU campus will have an "owner" who will direct individual campus efforts.

The Student Success Collaborative allows Indiana University to leverage "big data" by analyzing past student performance at IU. The goal is to identify issues that slow down students on their way to graduation and find the pathways and support services that most effectively enable student success.

"The Student Success Collaborative will help us to analyze data that we already maintain and allow us to dig deeper into the factors that facilitate and that hinder successful degree completion," Applegate said. "It will allow campuses to adjust advising practices to permit early, active intervention to assist students."

Select programs on all IU campuses will pilot the program this fall.

"The system will provide students and advisors with course and academic major success metrics including alternative course and academic major trajectories," Robel said. "In tandem with IU's recently developed early alert system, IU-FLAGS, which focuses on the course level, advisors on our campuses will have the information they need to intervene appropriately to improve student success."

Advisors and program administrators involved in the initial pilots will work to establish best practice and workflow integrations that suit the needs of each campus. All remaining programs will gradually go online so that the Student Success Collaborative interventions will be available for all IU students by Spring 2014.

"Because the Student Success Collaborative involves numerous participating institutions, academic leaders also have access to analysis based on a larger number of students than any single institution's enrollment," Paydar said.

Peer benchmarking and sharing of best practices will support learning at all institutions, and will broaden and deepen campus conversations about innovations in improving student success.
