IU's first Spanish and Portuguese Song Festival Friday in Frangipani Room at IMU
WHEN: April 1, 5-7 p.m.
WHERE: Frangipani Room, Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. Seventh St., Bloomington
WHAT: Nine IU students, selected after an internal audition in the IU Spanish and Portuguese Department, will perform a solo or duet in either Spanish or Portuguese before an experienced jury that will choose the three best performances. The festival also will include special music performances by students and professors from the Latin American Music Center and the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology.

Stanley Nelson's 'Freedom Riders'

WHAT: Stanley Nelson, an Emmy-winning MacArthur "Genius" Fellow, will discuss the premiere of his new film, Freedom Riders, which was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Many Cultures, One Family Tree

WHERE: Grand Hall of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, 275 N. Jordan Ave., Bloomington
WHAT: The program will include an opening invocation by Samuel Obeng of the African Studies Program; James Mumford, emeritus professor and emeritus director of the African American Choral Ensemble; and poet Maria Abugunde Hamilton of African-American and African Diaspora Studies. The event will conclude with the Family Dinner catered by Judges' Tip of the Rib Restaurant of Indianapolis and a spoken word performance and farewell dance.
