WHAT: Bjarne Stroustrup is the designer and original implementer of C and the author of Programming: Principles and Practice using C, The C Programming Language, The Design and Evolution of C and many other publications. His presentation reflects his thoughts on what "Modern C" should mean in the 2010s: A language for programming based on lightweight abstraction with a direct and efficient mapping to hardware, suitable for infrastructure code.

WHAT: This session, presented by Mark Masters, chair and professor of physics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, will explore not only the interesting facts about nuclear energy, but also address the fictions the public so often hears. Participants will have the opportunity to see how half-life works through a fun activity that tests just how fast a radioactive isotope can decay.

Iran and the Challenge of the Arab Spring

WHAT: Juan Cole, director of the Center for South Asian Studies and the Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan, is a renowned American scholar, public intellectual and historian of the modern Middle East and South Asia. Cole's lecture is being held in conjunction with the IU Art Museum's special exhibition, "The Graphics of Revolution and War: Iranian Poster Arts," on view through Dec. 18.

Xenotransplantation: Ethical Practices in the Lab and Clinic
WHEN: Nov. 17, 4 to 5 p.m.
WHERE: Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, 618 E. Third St., Bloomington
WHAT: As medical scientists continue to explore frontiers for expanding life-saving organ transplant procedures, new possibilities arise for cross-species transplantation. Many of the same ethical challenges attend to this research as they do to other research and clinical application. Yet, there are unique social, religious and philosophical concerns that must be attended to regarding both research and clinical practices. This talk will focus on how these ethical concerns can be effectively managed in order to save lives.
