Is There Evidence That Charter Schools Push Out Low-Performing Students?

WHAT: Professor Ron Zimmer, Vanderbilt University, examines data from an anonymous major urban school district to see whether there are patterns of low-achieving students exiting charter schools at a greater rate than students in traditional public schools using a linear probability model.

Workshop on the History of Biology
WHEN: All day Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8
WHERE: Ballantine Hall 003, Bloomington
WHAT: On the occasion of Fred Churchill's 80th birthday, friends and former students will gather in Bloomington for a workshop on their current research in the history of biology. Speakers will include Garland Allen, Mark Borrello, Alice Dreger, Paul Farber, Jane Maienschein, Marsha Richmond and Churchill himself, who will give a preview of his completed monograph on August Weismann.

Vice Presidential Forum on Trip to South America
WHEN: 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12
WHERE: Grand Foyer of the IU Auditorium, Bloomington
WHAT: Vice President David Zaret will speak about the recent trip of the IU delegation to South America. There will be an opportunity for questions and informal conversation with members of the delegation.

Public Policy Mediation Course
WHEN: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, Jan. 7 to 11
WHERE: Room 267, Inlow Hall, 530 W. New York St., Indianapolis
WHAT: The semi-annual course on Public Policy Mediation is a weeklong interdisciplinary program and the only mediation course of its kind in the state of Indiana. Graduates of this course recommend it to attorneys, judges and professionals. John Krauss, an experienced mediator, attorney and educator qualified to conduct basic mediation training under the Indiana Supreme Court rules, will be the primary trainer. Nan Stager, who serves as co-trainer, is an experienced mediator and has taught Alternative Dispute Resolution at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, guest speakers throughout the week will include seasoned practitioners, litigators, judges and experts in their fields of mediation, government and public policy.
COST: The registration fee of $875 includes materials and parking.
