BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Francesca Smith from Chesterton, Ind., has been named a Kelley Scholar at Indiana University Bloomington. Smith is a graduate of Chesterton High School.

The Kelley Scholarship honors the best undergraduate students entering IU to study business. Kelley Scholars receive tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses, and other funding, which may include funding for internships and overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $15,000.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its School of Business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the extent of the gift.

Kelley Scholars were selected from a group of 170 students who had been accepted to IU and who were invited to apply for the Kelley program because of their outstanding records. Applications included references, high school transcripts and several personal statements on a variety of topics, including an essay.

Twenty-six finalists were invited to the IU Bloomington campus Feb. 15-16. The weekend included extensive interviews with faculty members and current Kelley Scholars, submission by each candidate of a writing sample, campus tours and a dinner. The winners were selected on the basis of their performance that weekend.

While in high school, Smith was active in speech and debate, the National Honor Society and the Variety Show at Chesterton High School. Her honors included the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement in Writing Award, status as a National Merit Commended Student, third place at the Indiana High School Forensic Association State Speech Tournament in international extemporaneous speaking, and membership on the 2003 IHSFA All-State First Team. Other honors included membership on the IHSFA State Debate and Class AAA Speech championship teams, qualification to the National Forensic League national tournament in both Lincoln-Douglas Debate and International Extemporaneous Speaking, membership in the Chesterton High School 1000 Point Club for Speech and Debate, receipt of an Academic Ring, and membership in the Chesterton High School 5% Club.

Smith will begin her education at IU this fall.
