Kelley MSIS students win regional case competition; next is international competition in Las Vegas

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A team of three students in the Indiana University Kelley School of Business' Masters of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program has won a regional case competition and will next compete against schools from all over the globe in May 2010 in Las Vegas.
Priyanka Chandrasekaran, Jelanna Olivera-Morgan and Daniel Resnick were the three members of the winning team. All three students entered the MSIS program this fall.
The regional contest, co-sponsored by CA Inc. and the Kelley School, was held on Nov. 14 in Bloomington. Teams from Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Chicago took part in a case that challenged the students to evaluate and demonstrate the strategic value of IT management to contribute to the success of organizations.
"The CA global case competition on the strategic value of information technology management is the only one of its kind, focusing on issues at the intersection of business and technology. This win allows Kelley and the MSIS program to defend the international title they won in the first edition of the global case competition in November 2008," said Professor Ramesh Venkataraman, director of Kelley's MSIS program.
The teams were given a case study of a company that is in the throes of change. They then researched and evaluated the organization's challenges and gave recommendations on how to adapt and align technology to better support the changing business environment.
"Our overall solution focused on creating comprehensive management of information technology within an organization by executive representation for IT through a chief information officer, along with an integrated solution for IT governance and vendor management," noted Chandresekaran.
For the next round of the case competition, Kelley's winning team will travel to Las Vegas for the two-day competition, which coincides with CA World, CA's premier education and networking conference for customers and partners.
To prepare, "our team is going to work with Professor Keith Dayton to improve our presentation skills and slide deck. We are also going to continue to present together as a team throughout the semester to improve upon our team and individual skill sets," Resnick explained.
Olivera-Morgan reflected on Kelley's MSIS program, saying, "This has been an amazing journey for me. I have been immersed in industry-intensive, case-based instruction from leading consulting firms. By looking at key business initiatives, MSIS gives a solid, real-world perspective on just how technology enables true business value."
