BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Disney's hit Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast will premiere in Bloomington at IU Auditorium March 2 at 7:30 p.m., with additional shows March 3-4. The second family-friendly musical in IU Auditorium's season, Disney's Beauty and the Beast is the most lavish Broadway production of IU Auditorium's current season.

Beauty and the Beast

The musical played for more than 13 years on Broadway and the 1991 film's score was declared "the best Broadway score" by New York Times columnist Frank Rich. Beauty features the animated film's Academy Award-winning musical score, including the songs "Be Our Guest," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Something There."

Disney's Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a smart young woman living in "a poor provincial town," and Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self, but time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household of enchanted objects (formerly his servants) will be doomed for all eternity.

"We're excited that the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast is making its IU premiere this season," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "The classic story combined with the eye-popping spectacle of this lavish production is going to be one of the most memorable events this season."

Kids 10 and under can participate in a coloring contest to win free tickets to Beauty and the Beast. Coloring sheets are available at all Southern Indiana Pediatrics locations, Once Upon a Child (3486 W. 3rd St.) and on the B97 Web site, The contest runs through Feb. 25 and entries can be returned to Once Upon a Child.
