IU professor's new textbook uses the best science writing from the New York Times
For decades, The New York Times has been one of the nation's premier outlets for stories about science. Now, a retired Indiana University journalism professor has put many of those stories together in a unique collection aimed at students of science writing. Though intended for the classroom, Discover magazine blogger Carl Zimmer, and a contributor to the volume, has written that the collection, The New York Times Reader -- Science and Technology (Congressional Quarterly Press), is an anthology of science writing "that can stand on its own." 2010-11 IUAA Scholars recognized
The Indiana University Alumni Association Scholars program, now in its 16th year, awarded 28 $1,000 scholarships to IU students. Each recipient is the son or daughter of an IUAA member. Two scholarships are designated for qualifying applicants from each of IU's eight campuses, and the remaining awards are given on an at-large basis. Former reporter leaves IU journalism school $1M
Chicagotribune.com, June 8 -- An Indiana University alum who worked for years at a Lafayette newspaper before he died in 2008 has left $1 million to IU's School of Journalism. IU says the gift from Frank Arganbright was the first single donation of at least $1 million for scholarships from an individual in the history of the journalism school. Full story.

Help for Women Runners With Knee Pain
Medicinenet.com, June 4 -- Hip exercises can reduce a common type of knee pain in female runners, according to a new study. The exercise program reduced and, in some cases, eliminated knee pain, according to the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis researchers. Full story.
Daily breathing exercise ensures more oxygen for muscles
Sifynews.com, June 7 -- Daily breathing exercises for six weeks freed more oxygen for other muscles by cutting down on the amount required by breathing or inspiratory muscles during exercise. Louise Turner, researcher in kinesiology at the Indiana University, said just the act of breathing during an endurance activity such as running, swimming or cycling, performed at maximum intensity, can account for 10 to 15 percent of an athlete's total oxygen consumption.
