IUPUI motorsports students earn accolades after racing team sets world record
It sounds incredible that Indiana dragster driver Cory McClenathan traveled at over 324 mph when covering 1,000 feet in just 3.752 seconds to make drag racing history recently, but McClenathan says it was a group of motorsports engineering students at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis who were "unbelievable" in their assistance with helping him set the new record. IU professor: Window is closing rapidly for immigration reform
John D. Graham, dean of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs, is available to discuss President Obama's July 1 speech on immigration reform. Graham, who previously served as administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, suggested in April that immigration reform legislation would be a successful strategy for Obama to pursue. Read the complete story.

Law School, LSSSE welcome Carole Silver
The Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) announced the addition of Georgetown Law Center's Carole Silver to both organizations. Silver became a professor of law effective Thursday (July 1) and will begin directing LSSSE later this summer. Read the complete story.

McRobbie welcomes new members to IU Board of Trustees
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie today welcomed the selection of three new members and the reappointment of a fourth to the IU Board of Trustees. Gov. Mitch Daniels announced today that he was appointing to the board Bruce Cole, a former Indiana University faculty member and former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and William "Bill" Strong, vice chairman of Morgan Stanley, the global financial services firm. Daniels also announced the reappointment of Derica Rice, an executive vice president of Eli Lilly & Co. Read the complete story.

IU takes fifth-grade teachers back in time, to the Dominican Republic
The Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation's (HPER) Office of Underwater Science is partnering with fifth-grade teachers from Edgewood Intermediate School in Ellettsville to develop a curriculum based on actual IU research taking place in the Dominican Republic and involving some of the West's earliest explorers. IU Jacobs School of Music student Gabrielle Reed crowned Miss Indiana
For Indiana University Jacobs School of Music student Gabrielle Reed, the third time was the charm. After two unsuccessful attempts at the Miss Indiana crown, including a second runner-up honor in 2009, the 22-year-old voice major was crowned Miss Indiana Saturday, June 26, at the 70th annual Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant in Zionsville, Ind. The former Miss IU will represent Indiana in January at the 2011 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. Read the complete story.

Bishop elected as IU alumni trustee
Indiana University graduates today (June 30) elected MaryEllen Bishop of Carmel, Ind., to succeed Sue Talbot, who chose not to run for another term on the IU Board of Trustees. Bishop, a graduate of the Kelley School of Business and the IU School of Law-Indianapolis, is an attorney with Cohen, Garelick & Glazier in Indianapolis and served as national chair of the IU Alumni Association in 2007-08. Survey findings reveal how Indiana youth access alcohol
A survey of Indiana high school students found that three-quarters of those who drank alcohol recently said they usually gave someone money to buy alcohol or someone gave it to them at no cost. Around 5 percent of the teens successfully attempted to purchase alcohol from a retailer as their usual way of obtaining it. Read the complete story.

Daniels Names Two New Trustees at IU
InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report,Chicagotribune.com, jconline.com, July 1 -- Governor Mitch Daniels has appointed a former Indiana University faculty member and a prominent businessman to the IU Board of Trustees. Bruce Cole, former IU distinguished professor of art history and professor of comparative literature, and Bill Strong, vice chairman of Morgan Stanley, are the new members. Journalgazette.net, July 2 -- Joel Schumm, a professor at the Indiana University School of Law, said he expects the semifinalists and finalists to lean heavily toward women. He described many of the female applicants as "high caliber." He noted that while the Indiana Constitution says the appointment should be without regard to political party, "the reality is it usually does come into play." Full story.

Digital music archive a 'treasure'
Pal-item.com, July 1 -- The Starr-Gennett Foundation announced Wednesday the first phase of a music archive containing digital recordings from Richmond's past. The archive of more than 300 recordings from the early 19-teens to the late 1920s were all recorded by Gennett Records in Richmond and is available through the Indiana University Archive of Traditional Music. Anyone carrying an IU library card can access the recordings at the college's campuses in Richmond and Bloomington. Full story.
