IU Jacobs School of Music partners in new jazz initiative

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in partnership with Owl Studios of Indianapolis, today announced the inaugural Emerging Jazz Artist Project (EJAP), an annual competition open to jazz students in the Jacobs School of Music that culminates in a nationally released album.
Owl Studios will sponsor the costs of recording and release, and will provide mentoring through the entire process, offering the winner valuable promotional opportunities and professional experience.
"It is incumbent upon educators to explore new ways to inspire and instruct students by providing opportunities beyond the traditional means," said project organizer Brent Wallarab, assistant professor at Jacobs. "Through the hands-on experience of the Emerging Jazz Artist Project, our students will learn so much more. The project is a very inspiring opportunity to bring together the Jacobs School of Music and Owl Studios to support and nurture America's art form -- jazz."
Jacobs students will have until Oct. 11, 2010, to submit a recording of three compositions which demonstrate a clear concept and unique point of view of the future of jazz -- two originals and one arrangement of a pre-selected composition from an Indiana songwriter/composer, which all applicants must arrange. The 2010 pre-selected composition is "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" by Michael Jackson.
A panel of three judges will select the recipient of the award in a process which will be strictly anonymous. The winner will be announced at the jazz ensemble concert directed by David N. Baker, distinguished professor of music and chairman of the Jazz Studies Department at Jacobs, Oct. 25, at IU Bloomington's Musical Arts Center.
"It is exciting for Owl Studios to be a part of the Emerging Jazz Artist Project," said J. Allan Hall, Owl Studios president and CEO. "As we discover a new direction in jazz, Owl Studios will be there to document the emerging talent produced by the jazz department at the Jacobs School of Music."
