Evansville's Lin named Wells Scholar at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sibo Lin of Evansville, Ind., has been selected as a Wells Scholar at Indiana University, one of 20 entering freshmen so honored. Lin plans to pursue majors in biotechnology, Chinese and computer science at IU.

The Wells Scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university. Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of undergraduate study on the IU Bloomington campus.

A National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction and an Indiana Academic All-Star, Lin is the first Wells Scholar from Signature School, where he graduated as a valedictorian. A participant in both the speech and debate clubs throughout his high school years, he served as an officer for two years in speech and for three years in debate. In his junior year, his school's speech team placed second in the state and the debate team was named the best small-school team in Indiana. In his senior year, he was a state finalist in original interpretation and was named to the second all-state debate team.

Lin was also a member of the school's Robotics, Chem Bowl, Math Bowl and various other academic teams. He received a GE Star Award, was named an American Invitational Mathematics Exam qualifier and was honored as an Outstanding Scholar by the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics in his senior year.

He founded his school's newspaper, which he edited during his senior year, and served on the Student Advisory Council. He also served as secretary of the Key Club and volunteered with Patchwork Central, a tutoring program for inner city children. He was a member of the tennis team, which he captained his senior year, and the cross country team.

The Wells Scholars program offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. It also emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors. Wells Scholars are members of the Honors College at IU, where they have the opportunity to apply for grants in support of research, teaching internships, professional experience, creative activity, conference travel and honors thesis work. They are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.
