In order to extend unemployment benefits for the next 13 months, President Obama reached a deal with Republican leaders to continue the Bush tax cuts while providing a $5 million exemption on estate taxes over the next two years. The International Youth Library in Munich has selected Donna Adomat, assistant professor in the department of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education in the Indiana University School of Education, for one of its dozen fellowship awards presented annually. Economic expectations for the New Year brightened somewhat as the Leading Index for Indiana (LII) edged up in November and made progress for the third straight month. The LII saw a substantial increase in October, rising from 96.4 to 96.8, and a smaller but still encouraging increase in November to a value of 96.9. Read the complete story.

The Cleveland Orchestra announces IU residency activities for January 2011

Women's Volleyball: Indiana Volleyball's unprecedented run to the program's first Sweet 16 finally came to an end Friday night at the Dayton Regional, dropping a 3-0 decision (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) to the overall No. 6-seeded USC Trojans (28-4). Read the match notes.

IU Simon Cancer Center to Create Endowment Fund
InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report, Dec. 13 -- The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center has received a $100,000 gift from Health Opportunity through Partnership in Education (HOPE). The funding will be used to establish the HOPE Endowment Fund for Cancer Research. Full story.

New hospital logos set
Thestarpress.com, The Indianapolis Star, wlfi.com, Dec. 15, 14 -- The new logo features "an Indiana University trident atop a black square with the hospital name adjacent," as the health care corporation described it. The only Clarian hospital name and logo that will remain relatively the same is that for Riley Hospital for Children. The hospital's "red wagon" logo will still be used. Full story. Full story 2. 2 Cathedral students selected as Wells Scholars'
The Indianapolis Star, Dec. 16 -- Each year, IU selects 18-22 Wells Scholars. Named in honor of the university's former president, Herman B Wells, the prestigious scholarship provides full tuition, fees, and a living stipend for four years of undergraduate study on the Bloomington campus.
