Solo flutist of Vienna Philharmonic, Dieter Flury, visits for performance and master class at IU

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 7, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Dieter Flury, solo flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic since 1981, and the orchestra's general manager since 2005, will visit Bloomington with pianist Maria Prinz for a concert, Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in Auer Hall, and other educational activities in the Jacobs School of Music.

Praised by the press for his "soft, sensitive sound, perfect technique and his musical intelligence," Flury has been called a "flute Paganini" thanks to his "phenomenal finger and breath-technique." He enjoys a multifaceted career as a leading soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, teacher and orchestral leader.

Flury will be joined by Prinz and Jacobs faculty clarinetist Howard Klug in a concert of works by Alfred Prinz, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Saint-Saens. The performance, given just a few days prior to the flutist and pianist's concert at Carnegie Hall, is free and open to the public.

Flury and Klug will participate in a career-advice panel through the Project Jumpstart initiative in the Jacobs School on Tuesday, from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in MU204. In addition, he will offer a master class the same day 6:30 p.m. in MA405. Both events are open to all students in the Jacobs School.

Flury has performed as soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic on numerous occasions and made concerto appearances with the Vienna Symphony, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic. He is a versatile chamber music player performing regularly with the Vienna Wind Ensemble, Klangforum Wien, the Vienna Virtuosi and at all the major Swiss and Austrian music festivals. Several of the world's most acclaimed contemporary composers have written works for him, including Beat Furrer, György Ligeti, Salvatore Sciarrino, Herbert Willi and Hans Zender.

As a recitalist, Prinz has concertized in the U.S., Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Belgium and Bulgaria, and recently performed a series of recitals titled "Mozart and His Contemporaries" in Vienna, Sofia, Prague, Bloomington and Los Angeles in celebration of Mozart's 250th birthday. Her chamber music collaborations include numerous performances with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, including solo flutists Dieter Flury and Wolfgang Schulz and clarinetists Alfred Prinz and Peter Schmidl, among others. She has performed at leading venues and festivals around the world, including the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo (Japan) in both 2005 and 2008 and the Danube Festival in Ulm, Germany. Her 2008 debut at Weill Recital in at Carnegie Hall was followed by a very successful re-invitation in February 2010 which was called a "full-bodied and impassioned performance" by New York Concert Review.

Professor Klug is a chamber musician, soloist and clinician who has performed throughout the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, Portugal, Austria, Venezuela, China and Israel. He plays flute and clarinet, and was a saxophone soloist as member of the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Klug was principal clarinet with the Fresno Philharmonic, the Bear Valley Festival Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and is a former member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Grant Park Symphony.
