Winners of 2011 Indiana International Guitar Competition announced

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Chinese guitarist You Wang is the winner of the Open Division of the 2011 Indiana International Guitar Competition, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music announced today (March 30, 2011).

The Indiana International Guitar Festival and Competition took place Saturday and Sunday (March 26-27). It included a new youth component and featured guest performances by international performing artists Berta Rojas and Aniello Desiderio.

"The festival weekend was a tremendous success," said Ernesto Bitetti, artistic director of the festival and competition. "We were thrilled with the quality of performance by the participants and guest recitalists and happy to see how many classical guitar fans attended the headline events. Our thanks go to the many who worked to develop this year's festival, as well as our generous sponsors."

Competitors for this year's festival included guitarists from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Norway and China. The festival's final round was live-streamed online.

The winners are:

Open Division

  • First Prize: You Wang (China). Wang also received the A. Garcia Abril Award for the best interpretation of the composer's music.
  • Second Prize: Lars Rosvoll (Norway)
  • Honorable Mention: Ivan Resendiz (Mexico)

Youth Division

  • First Prize: Xavier Jara
  • Second Prize: Tobias James
  • Third Prize: Asa Bryce
  • Two Fourth Prizes: Andrew Laszlo and Alexander Arbuckle

You Wang began studying classical guitar at age 13 with world-renowned professor Zhi Chen at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China.

From 2004 to 2010, You Wang received a full scholarship to study with Maestro Denis Azabagic in Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. During this time, he also took master classes with Oscar Ghiglia, David Russell, Sergio Assad, Raphaella Smits, Lorenzo Micheli, Paul Galbraith, Andrew Zohn and Elena Papandreou.

Since 2000, You Wang has received top prizes in many major competitions including: Second Indiana International Guitar Festival and Competition, Louisville International Guitar Competition, Boston International Guitar Competition, ECU Summer Guitar workshop Competition, Columbus Guitar Competition and Symposium, American Society of Musicians National Competition for all instruments, Hong Kong Third International Guitar Competition and Chinese Young Artist National Competition.

The 2011 Indiana International Guitar Festival and Competition was sponsored by Aranjuiz Strings, the Bloomington Classical Guitar Society, Fundación Antón García Abril, Fundación Espinosa, the Indiana University Office of International Affairs and Strings by Mail.
