IU Bloomington to host forum on Indian Ocean tsunami disaster and humanitarian response

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- To examine the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the coastlines of the Indian Ocean, Indiana University Bloomington will host an interdisciplinary academic forum on Thursday, Jan. 13.

A special guest will be Peter Kovach, director of the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy from the State Department's Bureau of Southeast Asia and Pacific Affairs.

The forum, "Indian Ocean Tsunami and Humanitarian Response: A Campus-Community Forum", will include experts on scientific, social, political and humanitarian aspects of the disaster. It will take place at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. 7th St.

Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan and Maria Carrasquillo of the Bloomington chapter of the American Red Cross will join IU faculty members and Kovach in a community-wide forum. The forum's goal is to stimulate discussions in the campus and community, and motivate contributions for relief efforts. The forum will be followed by a discussion on disaster response and community action. A reception will follow in the Solarium of the IMU.

Additional details on the forum and related campus and community events will be posted at a special Web site at https://www.indiana.edu/~tsunami/.
