Sherrill is Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week

May 4, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Faith Sherrill is the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The junior from Fort Wayne launched a school record in the shot put this weekend en route to a Penn Relays title in the event. Sherrill wins the award for the fifth time in her career (three indoor, two outdoor). It is the fourth honor of the outdoor season for IU track and field.

Indiana track and field director and head coach Ron Helmer said he likes that Sherrill is getting better as the season moves along.

"We had a great weekend as a team at the Penn Relays, with our student-athletes competing at high levels throughout the meet," Helmer said. "Faith grabbed another school record and won the shot put. She is getting better as the season moves forward, and we look for that to continue in the postseason."

Sherrill recorded a heave of 17.64m (57-10.5) to win by almost four feet. The Hoosier surpassed NCAA Champion Katrin Koch's IU record by 4.25 inches. Fittingly, Koch was the last Hoosier to win the Penn Relays shot put crown. Koch won in 1990 after IU's Angie Ryker won in 1989 and 1988. Sherrill wins the fourth Penn Relays shot put crown in IU history.

Sherrill's throw is the eighth-best in the 117-year history of the meet. With her school record, she moves into second on the NCAA descending order list this season and leads the Big Ten by more than four feet. The school record is her fourth, completing a set that includes the indoor and outdoor shot put records, the indoor weight throw record and the outdoor hammer throw mark.

Next on the schedule for the Hoosiers is the Billy Hayes Invitational on May 6 in Bloomington.
