Hoosiers in ninth after day one at NCAA Indiana Regional

May 19, 2011

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team is in ninth place after the first round of play at the 2011 NCAA Indiana Regional at Wolf Run Golf Club on Thursday. The Hoosiers registered a 9-over 293 and sit eight shots back of a spot in the top-five. The low five teams, as well as the top individual not on a top-five team, in the regional will advance to the finals.

"We got off to a good start after Corey Ziedonis got things rolling," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer, "but we stumbled in the four, three, and two spots. David Erdy bookended it well coming in with an even-par 71. Overall, we put ourselves a little bit behind. It's going to take a special effort to get in the top-five, but this team is capable of making that happen."

Illinois has the first round lead after posting a 7-under 277, one shot ahead of Alabama and Michigan at 278. The top-five following day one is rounded out by Stanford (284) and Iowa (285).

The individual leaderboard features seven players tied for the day one lead with 3-under 68s, along with a group of six sitting one shot back at 2-under.

Corey Ziedonis led the way for the Hoosiers, firing a 1-under 70 to tie for 14th. The sophomore led for much of the day at 4-under until a triple-bogey at the par-5 17th set him back.

David Erdy rebounded after a 3-over 38 on the front side with an eagle and three birdies on the back nine to record an even-par 71 and tie for 18th.

Chase Wright and David Mills each carded 5-over 76s in the opening round to tie for 50th. Brant Peaper rounded out the Indiana lineup with a 7-over 78 to tie for 61st, including an eagle on the par-4 ninth.

The Hoosiers will be paired with Florida State and Memphis during round two on Friday, beginning with Peaper's group at 8:00 a.m.
