Campus garden to put on Lunch and Learn event for faculty and staff

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- To fulfill its mission of growing food for the Indiana University Bloomington campus and engaging the community in the process, IU's campus garden at the Bryan House will host a Lunch and Learn event for faculty and staff on Thursday (July 21) from noon to 1 p.m.

Stephanie Hopkins, IU Office of Sustainability intern and garden coordinator, will lead a discussion of the importance of growing food for the campus community and incorporating the food-growing process into IU Bloomington's academic initiatives.

"It is important for faculty and staff to have a stake in how the campus garden functions within the institutions of the university," Hopkins said. "And, we'd like to provide an opportunity for people to visit the garden and enjoy their lunch outside."

Faculty and staff from all campus departments are encouraged to attend. Shade, water and salad greens from the garden will be provided, but participants should pack their own lunch. Those interested in attending should RSVP to

The campus garden initiative, a project of the IU Office of Sustainability, fosters environmental and social sustainability by creating interactive, edible gardening spaces on the Bloomington campus.

IU Bloomington's first campus-community garden, located at Bryan House in the heart of campus, is home to 900 square feet of gardening space. By modeling different ways to produce food in a campus setting, the garden will serve as a pilot for future gardening projects on campus, as well as a space for students, faculty and staff to engage in the process of growing food.
