IU Trustees to conduct statewide forum on tuition

Public invited to participate through interactive video links

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Board of Trustees will conduct a statewide forum on April 13 to hear public comment on tuition and mandatory fee proposals for the 2005-06 academic year.

The nine-member board will convene in Bloomington and use interactive video links to communicate with forum attendees at sites in Indianapolis and six regional campuses across the state. Students, parents and others interested in this topic are welcome to attend at any location.

The forum will enable trustees to receive preliminary information about tuition and fee recommendations from the university administration, and then take comments and questions from participants throughout the state.

The forum will begin at 1:30 p.m. (EST) and continue for two hours. IU President Adam W. Herbert will open the forum and then turn it over to Judy Palmer, IU vice president and chief financial officer, who will update trustees on the status of the administration's tuition and fees recommendations.

Ken Beckley, president of the IU Alumni Association, will serve as moderator and direct questions and comments to trustees.

"The information presented in this forum will help students, parents and others better understand how the costs of operating Indiana University impact tuition rates and how we strive to maintain accessibility, quality and affordability," said Frederick F. Eichhorn Jr., president of the board.

"We believe we have an obligation to provide those interested in Indiana University and higher education with an opportunity to give us their input before we establish tuition and fee rates for the next academic year," Eichhorn said.

Trustees are not expected to act on 2005-06 tuition and mandatory fees until the legislature finishes work on a new state budget and the level of state support for higher education is known.

The trustees will convene in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union building on the Bloomington campus. The seven other video-linked sites are:

  • IU East, Richmond: Middlefork 202
  • IPFW, Fort Wayne: Kettler G20
  • IUPUI, Indianapolis: ES 2101
  • IU Kokomo: Main 214

  • IU Bloomington: Frangipani Room, IMU
  • IU Southeast, New Albany: Hillside 102 (starts 2:30 p.m. local time)
