Jacobs School students excel in local NSAL competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Jacobs School of Music students received numerous awards in the Bloomington Chapter of the 2012 National Society of Arts and Letters voice, instrumental and ballet competitions recently held at the Jacobs School of Music.

The top two winners in each category will perform at the NSAL 46th Annual Showcase of the Arts on Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m. in the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.

Voice Category

The Chapter Career Award ($1,000) was received by Katherine Weber, a master's student who studies with Costanza Cuccaro.

The Donald Felton Memorial Award ($600) was received by Nathaniel Olson, a master's student who studies with Timothy Noble.

The Mary Alice Cox and Jim Koch Merit Award ($500) was received by Ashley Stone, a doctoral student who studies with Costanza Cuccaro.

The JoAnn Athanas Memorial Award ($300) was received by Elizabeth Toy, a master's student who studies with Costanza Cuccaro

The JoAnn Athanas Memorial Award ($200) was received by Sandra Periord, a bachelor's student who studies with Alice Hopper.

The Camilla Williams Memorial Award ($200) was received by Rainelle Krause, a master's student who studies with Andreas Poulimenos.

Instrumental Category

The Lynton and Helen Caldwell Memorial Award and Donald Neal Memorial Award ($1,000) was received by harpist Emily Levin, a bachelor's student studying with Susann McDonald.

The Steve and Jo Ellen Ham Merit Award and Olimpia Barbera Merit Award ($600) was received by pianist Ilya Friedberg, a Performer Diploma student studying with Menahem Pressler.

The Beth and John Drewes Merit Award ($300) was received by guitarist Rodrigo Almeida, a Performer Diploma student studying with Ernesto Bitetti.

The Patrick O'Meara Merit Award ($250) was received by harpist Anna McNulty, a bachelor's student studying with Elzbieta Szmyt.

The Larry Davis Merit Award ($250) was received by pianist Hyun Ji You, a master's student studying with Karen Shaw.

The Ilknur P. Ralston Memorial Award ($250) was received by pianist Haneul Lee, a Performer Diploma student studying with Karen Shaw.

The Susann McDonald Merit Award and Ledford Carter Merit Award ($200) was received by Erol B. Ozsever, a doctoral student studying with Ernesto Bitetti.

Ballet Category

The JoAnn Athanas Memorial Award ($250) was received by Elisabeth MartinDonor, a bachelor's student in the Ballet Department.

The Marina Svetlova Memorial Award in Dance ($200) was received by Jacob Taylor, a bachelor's student in the Ballet Department.

Chairs for the NSAL competitions were Mary Alice Cox and Jim Koch, voice; Emma Dederick, instrumental; and Carolyn Bailey, ballet.

Additional awards in the Ballet Category:

The JoAnn Athanas Memorial Award ($1,000) was received by Hannah Sink, a student at the Central Indiana Academy of Dance.

The Marina Svetlova Memorial Award in Dance ($300) was received by Hannah Rosenfeld, a student at the Indianapolis School of Ballet.

NSAL Bloomington

The Bloomington Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters was founded in 1966 by professionals and patrons representing both Indiana University and the south-central Indiana region. Since its founding, the chapter has awarded more than $500,000 to emerging young artists preparing for professional careers. Annual competitions in the arts are judged by active professionals in the visual arts, dance, drama, literature, music and musical theatre. Many Bloomington award winners have gone on to distinguished national and international careers.
