IU sets enrollment marks university-wide, on campuses

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University set another overall enrollment record this fall with 102,067 students enrolled in classes on seven campuses around the state.
New campus marks for most students were set at IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest and IU South Bend. Students were enrolled in record numbers of credit hours at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU East and IU Kokomo.
"I am delighted that Indiana University has once again enrolled a record number of students," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "These figures show that we are continuing to provide an affordable, high-quality education that students want and value, whether they are traditional-age students seeking a world-class college experience, graduate students pursuing specialized studies, working adults who want to advance their careers or high school students getting a head start on college.
"As a result of the breadth and quality of our academic programs, IU, which graduates significantly more students than any other higher education institution in the state, continues to play a vital role in Indiana by educating and training students for successful careers and as skilled professionals."
Overall IU enrollment is up by 87 students (0.1 percent) this fall from the previous university-wide record set in the fall of 2011. Total credit hours declined slightly by 0.5 percent university-wide.
Enrollment increases were especially strong at IU East, which grew by 12.4 percent, and IU Kokomo, where student numbers increased by 12.1 percent. Both also had significant increases in credit hours: 7.4 percent at IU East and 8.3 percent at IU Kokomo.
At several regional campuses, enrollment growth was driven in part by increases in the number of high school students who are also taking university classes. This trend is in keeping with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education's efforts to increase access to college, reduce the time it takes students to graduate and control the cost of earning a degree.
Student and credit-hour figures for IU campuses include:
- IU Bloomington -- 42,133 students, down 1.4 percent from last year; 562,757 credit hours, down 1.3 percent
- IUPUI -- 30,451 students, down 0.3 percent; 346,487 credit hours, up 0.2 percent
- IU East -- 4,186 students, up 12.4 percent; 39,309.5 credit hours, up 7.4 percent
- IU Kokomo -- 3,719 students, up 12.1 percent; 35,088 credit hours, up 8.3 percent
- IU Northwest -- 6,184 students, up 2.5 percent; 61,528 credit hours, down 0.1 percent
- IU South Bend -- 8,490 students, up 1.3 percent; 79,540 credit hours, down 1.1 percent
- IU Southeast -- 6,904 students, down 4.9 percent; 69,763 credit hours, down 5.5 percent
The numbers released today, referred to as census results, constitute the official figures for 2012-13. Census counts are made a week after the start of classes, allowing for changes resulting from late registration. Classes began Aug. 20 at IU Bloomington, IUPUI and IU Kokomo and Aug. 27 at IU East, IU Northwest, IU Southeast and IU South Bend.
IU's official reports do not include Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne counts of IU students; IPFW is administered by Purdue. If students enrolled in IU programs at IPFW are included, IU's overall enrollment this fall is 110,393, down just 43 students from the record set last year.
