Ganguly to direct Center for American and Global Security at IU Bloomington

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 25, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sumit Ganguly, Tagore Professor of Political Science at Indiana University Bloomington, has been appointed director of the Center on American and Global Security, a research center within the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences.

Larry Singell, dean of the College, appointed Ganguly to a three-year term as director of the center, which will play an important role in the activities of IU's new School of Global and International Studies. Ganguly, who also holds the Rabindranath Tagore Chair in Indian Cultures and Civilizations, was previously director of research for the center.

"I am delighted with this appointment and look forward to working with colleagues across campus who are interested in questions of both national and international security," Ganguly said. "At a time when security issues loom large in the global order, the university's renewed commitment to the study and analysis of the subject is timely and appropriate."

Singell has called for the center to serve as a hub for external funding for projects within the School of Global and International Studies and to host conferences, colloquia and workshops. It is also expected to foster targeted activities that connect the new school with security policy, including the development of language and training programs for U.S. military personnel.

"Dr. Ganguly brings an excellent record of scholarship to the center," Singell said. "In addition to his outstanding scholarship, he is widely respected as a public intellectual, serving as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London."

Ganguly's research and writing focus on security and politics in South Asia. His most recent books are "Conflict Unending: Indo-Pakistani Tensions Since 1947" and "India Since 1980" (with Rahul Mukherji). He is currently working on a book, "Deadly Impasse: Indo-Pakistani Relations at the Dawn of a New Century," for Cambridge University Press. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Political Science Review, Asian Survey, Current History, the Nonproliferation Review, International Security, Pacific Affairs and Security Studies.

Ganguly has been a fellow and a guest scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a visiting fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. His research and writing have been supported by grants from the Asia Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corp. of New York, the United States Institute of Peace and the United States Army War College. He is the founding editor of the journals India Review and Asian Security and the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of 20 books on South Asia.
