Schubert scholar Brian Newbould in week-long residency at the Jacobs School of Music

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 15, 2013

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Lecture Committee is delighted to welcome Schubert scholar Professor Brian Newbould, Professor Emeritus of Music at University of Hull (UK,) for a series of events, Feb. 20-24, including two public lectures and the premiere of his transcription of a Schubert composition.

Newbould is the author of books on Schubert and of completions of several works left unfinished by the composer. His realisations of three fragmentary Schubert symphonies have been performed and broadcast around the world, conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Charles Mackerras and Sir Simon Rattle among others, and have been recorded several times.

"It's rare to find someone with such an amazing range of experiences in so many aspects of musical life -- professional and academic, as a scholar and as a practical composer -- and all at the very highest level of accomplishment," said Roman Ivanovitch, associate professor of music theory and coordinator of Newbould's visit. "We hope that students and faculty from the Jacobs School of Music will find something to engage with during Prof. Newbould's week-long visit."

Free public events during Newbould's visit:

Wednesday, Feb 20 at 4:00 p.m., Ford-Crawford Hall
Guest lecture on completing unfinished works from composers' sketches, an event sponsored by the Composition Department.

Newbould's visit is sponsored by the Jacobs School's Lecture Series Committee, in collaboration with Professor Campbell and in association with composition, piano, and music theory departments.

Since retirement as Professor of Music in the University of Hull, Brian Newbould has lectured widely in the North and South Americas, Australasia, Europe and Scandinavia. He has written ground-breaking articles on Ravel, Brahms and Elgar as well as Schubert. He has specialised in 'reachout', hosting special-interest music holidays and giving pre-concert talks for leading orchestras, and has also given talks with live illustrations by the Allegri String Quartet, the Chilingirian Quartet, the Lindsays, the London Mozart Trio, and Jyväskylä Sinfonia in Finland. He recently finished his fourth Schubert symphonic fragment in response to a BBC commission, for a premiere by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in March 2012, broadcast as part of BBC Radio Three's 'Spirit of Schubert' week, for which he was special adviser and to which he contributed nine broadcasts.

In addition to activities described above, Newbould will be visiting and leading classes in the music theory and piano department.
