IU in the News

Informatics offshoot is definitely one to watch
Indianapolis Star, March 5 -- As a coach of world-class divers, John Wingfield knows the right words to say -- when to push his athletes and when to hold back. At competitions, his divers can pull out their trusty portables and review their performances. On the iPods, the best dives -- the ones that pull scores of 8, 8.5 and better from judges -- are shown over and over, with music. It's the ultimate positive-reinforcement mechanism. And the technology that makes it happen originated here. The company behind the training device and many other useful video and animation tools is Medical Animatics, a startup fueled by brain power from the Indiana University School of Informatics. Jacobs School of Music announces '07 to '08 opera and ballet season
Indiana Daily Student, March 5 -- The Jacobs School of Music has announced its 2007 to 2008 Opera and Ballet Theater Season, and its opener, Rossini's "Rigoletto," doesn't exactly have everyone thrilled. "Now every soprano is trying to learn 'Caro Nome,'" said one voice professor with a groan, referring to one of the opera's more prominent and oversung arias. But there is still plenty to be genuinely excited about in the upcoming year, not the least of which is an entirely new production of Puccini's classic "La Boheme." Read the full story.

IU ends season undefeated at Assembly Hall
Indiana Daily Student, March 5 -- Hoosier fans inside Assembly Hall on Saturday night maintained their usual set of chants and cheers for IU coach Kelvin Sampson, senior guards Errek Suhr and Rod Wilmont, and the rest of the standards usually yelled at home games. By the end of the night, though, the crowd added a new chant to its repertoire - one that hasn't been yelled in Assembly Hall for 13 years: "undefeated." Read the full story.

IUs next president greets students before game
Indiana Daily Student, March 5 -- Nearly 200 people were in attendance Saturday afternoon at the Hoosier Room in Memorial Stadium to get acquainted with IUs newly selected president. Michael McRobbie, who will be the 18th IU president, excited the crowd in his opening remarks by taking off his red IU sweater to reveal a blue shirt and red tie, synonymous with IU men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson's attire. Read the full story.

McRobbie's history at IU seen as an advantage
Bloomington Herald-Times, March 4 -- Until last week, it had been 36 years since Indiana University selected a president who was already working for the institution. It worked well then, and it's a good idea now, said President Emeritus John Ryan, who went on to head the university for 16 years after being named IU's leader in January 1971. "Every university has a sort of subculture of its own. Indiana's no exception," Ryan said. "I think it's an advantage to the president to have a sense of the culture of the place, the sociology of the place, the politics of the place." Read the full story.
