Robert B. Schnabel selected dean of IU School of Informatics -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert announced today (April 3) that Robert B. Schnabel, an acclaimed computer scientist and researcher, will become the next dean of the IU School of Informatics pending approval by IU trustees. Read the complete story.
"Hidden communties" receive national attention at HIV/STD conference -- The charms of small-town living offer challenges, as well, for people with HIV, AIDS and STDs. Adequate support and treatment can be difficult to obtain and even more elusive for people in "hidden communities," such as injection drug users and nongay-identified men who have sex with men, that often are considered throw-away communities by their rural neighbors. IU's Jamie Barton named MET Opera winner -- Indiana University Jacobs School of Music master's student Jamie Barton was named a grand prize winner at the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions on Sunday (April 1), making her the eighth winner from the IU Jacobs School of Music in the past 10 years. Native Americans at IU Bloomington celebrate the opening of a new cultural center -- Native Americans at Indiana University Bloomington will celebrate the opening of a new center for American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians on Wednesday, April 11 in Eigenmann Hall. Flynn named to lead Center for International Business Education and Research in the Kelley School -- Barbara Flynn, professor of operations management at the Kelley School of Business' Indianapolis campus, has been named the new director of the IU Center for International Business Education and Research. Most modern forests don't resemble what they replaced -- The great forests that once covered the eastern United States were cut down almost completely by settlers who needed open land for farming and timber for construction. When some areas proved unsuitable for agriculture, they were abandoned by the farmers who had cleared them, and the forests had a chance to grow back. But what grew back was different from what had been destroyed, partly because there was a lot less of it. "Breaking up forests into smaller communities changes the composition of species," said Indiana University scientist Kelly Caylor. Read the complete story.

IU vocalist wins big in New York
Indianapolis Star, April 3 -- A graduate student at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington is one of six vocalists from around the country who have been named winners of the Metropolitan Opera's 2007 National Council Auditions. Jamie Barton, a 25-year-old mezzo-soprano, won $15,000 at the grand finals concert Sunday on the Met stage in New York. Read the complete story.
Building up Life sciences
Indianapolis Star, April 3 -- Clarian Health Partners and Indiana University School of Medicine -- are the lead partners behind more than $500 million worth of medical buildings being built on the IUPUI campus and near the Downtown Canal. Apart from expansions at Eli Lilly and Co., the current Clarian- and medical school-led projects amount to one of the largest construction booms for Indiana's growing life-sciences sector.
