IU's Traditional Arts Indiana program honored with resolution -- Traditional Arts Indiana (TAI), a partnership between Indiana University's Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology and the Indiana Arts Commission, on Monday (April 2) was honored with a resolution passed by the Indiana General Assembly. Four Guggenheim fellowships go to Indiana University faculty -- Four of this year's Guggenheim Fellows are professors at Indiana University Bloomington. The election of IUB science historian Domenico Bertoloni-Meli, composer David Dzubay, Near Eastern languages and cultures Professor John Walbridge, and sociologist Pamela Barnhouse Walters brings IU's total of Guggenheim Fellows to 123. Up Close and Personal with Mme. Butterfly -- IU Jacobs School of Music closes its 2006-07 Opera & Ballet Theatre season with Giacomo Puccini's exotic and deeply moving Madama Butterfly. Performing the lead role of Cio-cio-san (Madame Butterfly) is Jing Zhang, a lyric soprano and second-year masters student of vocal performance. During the opera's hectic final week of rehearsals, she alighted and graciously answered a few questions for Live at IU. Read the complete story.

Celebrate Nation Poetry Month with events at IU -- T.S. Eliot called April "the cruelest month." Possibly to offset the bad rap the month has had since "The Waste Land" was penned, the Academy of American Poets declared April National Poetry Month in 1996. Now the largest literary celebration in the world, National Poetry Month continues to increase the visibility, presence and accessibility of poetry in American culture. IU Bloomington celebrates poetry this month with multiple events occurring in conjunction with a month-long festival. Read the complete story.

Women's Tennis: The Indiana women's tennis team snapped a six-match winning streak with a 7-0 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday, April 7.

Men's Tennis: Despite solid singles play that saw four matches go into three sets, the Indiana men's tennis team fell to Wisconsin, 5-2.

Women's Water Polo: The Indiana University water polo team defeated rival Michigan, the No. 17 team in the country, 9-7.

Men's Golf: The Indiana men's golf team stands in a tie for third place with a total of 308 after the first round of the Boilermaker Invitational.

Results for Sunday, April 8:

Men's Tennis: The No. 71 Indiana men's tennis team edged past No. 57 Northwestern, 4-3, on Sunday, April 8.

Women's Tennis: Despite winning the doubles point behind Laura McGaffigan and Alba Berdala's upset victory at No. 1 doubles, the No. 34 Indiana women's tennis team received its first loss in Big Ten play against No. 11 Northwestern, 5-2.

Baseball: The Indiana baseball team was bested in a pair of games by Northwestern on Sunday, April 8, with the Wildcats taking a 5-3 victory in the opener and a 1-0 win in the second game.

Softball: Indiana fell to No. 8/7 Northwestern on Sunday, April 8, in the first game of a doubleheader, 14-7 and 5-1 in the second.

Men's Golf: The Indiana men's golf team tied for sixth place at the Boilermaker Invitational on Sunday, April 7.

Program helps students reach college; Initiative focuses on extending aid to underserved areas
Indiana Daily Student, April 9 -- A new IU initiative will make an effort to ensure that students from all walks of life can attend college. Part of the state budget bill includes a provision for the Pathways to Success Initiative, a program designed to prepare students for college and increase their chances of success in postsecondary education. Cancer confidant; IU is hoping its new Web portal, expected to launch early next year, will become a trusted source of information for patients and their doctors
Indianapolis Star, April 9 -- Medical and technology experts at Indiana University hope to make the Web an even better tool for cancer patients. The IU team is creating a customized Internet portal they hope will help future cancer patients more efficiently use the Internet to gain information and manage their care. Read the complete story.

IU approves $64.5 million technology center; Section would be partially underground to protect computers from extreme weather
Indianapolis Star, April 9 -- Indiana University trustees approved design plans Friday for the Cyber Infrastructure Facility, putting the project on a fast track for construction over the next two years. The facility will include a 117,800-square-foot office building for information technology employees and a partially underground data center to house computers and IT equipment.
