He to lead IU Center for AIDS Research -- Johnny J. He, Ph.D., has been named director of the Indiana University Center for AIDS Research. Dr. He's major research interests are the molecular mechanisms of HIV infection and development in the central nervous system and how the HIV and hepatitis C viruses evade human immune systems. An associate professor of microbiology and immunology and of medicine, Dr. He also is an associate member of the Walther Oncology Center. Read the complete story.

IU Informatics security experts draw new weapon in war on cyber crime -- Researchers at the Indiana University School of Informatics have developed new tools to help consumers avoid becoming victims of online fraud -- cartoons. While good education can hardly secure a computer system, many experts believe that users often do not understand the risks of installing certain software, particularly those aimed at them by online scam artists. "Security is about understanding what can hurt you, but very few of us have the time or dedication to read books and articles about Internet security," said associate professor Markus Jakobsson. "Still, we all need to know the basics. Regulators understand the importance of consumer education, too, and recent federal guidelines advise financial institutions to provide education for their clients. Read the complete story.

IU's Cream and Crimson Weekend coming up June 15-17 -- Indiana University alumni from around the world will be on the IU Bloomington campus June 15-17 for the annual Cream and Crimson Alumni Weekend. As part of the festivities, numerous alumni will be honored. Highlights of the weekend include a barbecue, two awards banquets and breakfasts hosted by IU schools. Reunions are planned for the classes of 1957 and 1967, the School of Law-Bloomington Class of 1957 and the Emeritus Club. Read the complete story.

NSSE names McCormick as new director -- Alexander C. McCormick has been named director of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) effective January, 2008. Based at Indiana University, NSSE annually records the activities and experiences of undergraduates in the U.S. and Canada and what institutions do to promote student learning and personal development. Social Work, Labor Studies To Merge -- The IU Division of Labor Studies will merge with the IU School of Social Work, effective July 1, 2007, announced Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Chancellor Charles R. Bantz. Bantz said he concurred with a transition team's opinion that the compatible missions of the two academic units will make for unique opportunities for collaborative teaching, research and service. Morris Receives Bepko Community Medallion -- The IUPUI Senior Academy recently presented the second Gerald L. Bepko Community Medallion to James T. Morris, former executive director of the United Nations World Food Program. Read the complete story.

Student Media mourns; IU Student Media Director dies at age 59
Indiana Daily Student, June 4 -- Dave Adams, 59, longtime director of student media at Indiana University's School of Journalism, died Saturday night. Fall 2007 Editor-in-Chief senior Trevor Brown feels the loss of Dave Adams is going to leave something missing. "There will be a big hole that will be hard to replace," Brown said. "Adams played such a huge part in college media and allowing the students at the paper to grow." Read the complete story.

IU School of Informatics Launches Cartoons on Internet Security
Inside Indiana Business, June 4 -- Researchers at the Indiana University School of Informatics are hoping that a new series of cartoons will help people to better understand security issues involving their computers. The school says many users don't understand the risks of installing certain software and don't have time to read books and articles about Internet security. Researchers say this is the first cartoon-based approach aimed at understanding the Internet risks faced by typical users. Read the complete story.

Most grads stay in state; Purdue, IPFW, IU dominate list of local students' choices
Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, June 3 -- A survey of the top 10 graduates at each high school in Allen County shows nearly 75 percent will stay in Indiana for further education. About 21 percent will attend a college out of state, and the remainder plan to enter the military, are undecided or have other plans. Read the complete story.

IU smoothes transfer from Ivy Tech; Two-year degrees will transfer to four-year programs at all IU campuses
News and Tribune, May 31 -- An agreement reached between Indiana University and the Ivy Tech Community College system will make the transition smoother for students following in Sumner's footsteps. The two institutions -- which combined enroll more than 200,000 students -- have signed formal agreements to transition Ivy Tech two-year degrees to IU four-year degrees at campuses throughout the state.
