IU Jacobs School to open historic 2007-08 season in September with Andre Watts -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will continue its tradition of welcoming the world's most illustrious musicians -- both in residence and as guests -- and presenting new and legendary music when it kicks off its 2007-2008 season next month. Among other highlights is the debut of Leonard Slatkin as a Jacobs School faculty member conducting the IU Philharmonic. Read the complete story.

First IU 21st Century Covenant Scholars arrive on Bloomington campus -- A new freshman class arrives on the Indiana University Bloomington campus this week. IUPUI Presents Percussion Stars in "On-The-Canal" Tribute to Remo Belli -- The IUPUI School of Music is featuring notable percussionists from Indiana in a tribute concert to Indiana legend Remo Belli from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2007, at the Indiana Historical Society, 450 West Ohio St. A Concert on the Canal series presentation, the tribute will take place on the IHS lower level patio adjacent to the Downtown Canal. Bradford Woods' $1.2 million wetlands: Functional, sustainable, educational; "Riley Kids," environmental education students, corporate clients to benefit from state-of-the-art system -- When "Riley Kids," fifth graders from Indianapolis, Bloomington and Martinsville area schools, and others visit Indiana University's Bradford Woods this year, they will be among the first to experience the outdoor center's new constructed wetlands. While the wetlands will certainly enrich the educational experience for area students, it was built primarily as a practical solution to the center's aging wastewater treatment facility. Digital Artists Named Winners At VisionFest 2007 -- Two students in the New Media Program at the IU School of Informatics, and a recent graduate of the program were among the digital artists chosen as category winners at VisionFest 2007, a juried digital art and animation event for high school and college students. Entries were received in three categories - Sequential Art, 2D Animation and 3D Animation - and were judged by top Hollywood animation and digital art professionals during the three-day festival on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). AMID expands faculty ranks with new appointments -- The Indiana University Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design has announced an expansion of its full-time faculty for the 2007-08 academic year to support growing student enrollment levels in its courses. Read the complete story.

Wal-Mart in Mexico; Globalization of food retailing prompts many changes -- Wal-Mart's first international venture was in Mexico in 1991, and in economic terms it has been an outstanding success. The company is now Mexico's most important retailer and largest private employer, with almost 150,000 workers. However, Wal-Mart's success has transformed Mexican business practices, consumption patterns and supply chains, according to Indiana University Professor James Biles, a specialist in economic geography. Women's Soccer: The Indiana women's soccer team was bested in its lone exhibition contest of the 2007 preseason, falling to Missouri on Tuesday night, 5-0. The Hoosiers open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 31, at No. 13 Florida. Read Tuesday's game notes.

Schedule for Friday, Aug. 24 - Sunday, Aug. 26:

Women's Volleyball: The Hoosiers take on Western Kentucky today at 5 p.m., Northern Illinois on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Western Illinois at 5 p.m. Saturday in DeKalb, Ill.

Field Hockey: Saturday, Aug. 25 the field hockey ladies will take on Pacific at 4 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif. and Cal on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Men's Soccer: The Hoosiers play the New Mexico Lobos in Fort Wayne on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m.

IU makes security improvements
WTHR 13, Aug. 22 -- IU has stepped up security, partially in response to the mass shooting at Virginia Tech earlier this year. Six of eleven dorms are now outfitted with card access entry, meaning only those who live there can get in. IU has also improved its closed-circuit TV system. Read the complete story.

Indiana Daily Student, Aug. 23 -- While other students at IU went on vacation or took classes over the summer, seniors Mike MacDonald and Ben Oprinovich spent their time filling out paperwork for Indiana and the Internal Revenue Service. They weren't in any legal trouble. Instead, they were en route to gaining a trademark for their T-shirt that is being distributed around campus with the slogan, "Win it for Hep," in honor of the football team's late coach, Terry Hoeppner. IUN bans campus smokes
Gary Post-Tribune, Aug. 22 -- Students took drags on their cigarettes on Indiana University Northwest's campus Tuesday, the day after a smoking ban officially started. But those days are numbered. Signs indicating the campus is smoke-free have been posted, giving students notice of the new policy, and the ban will be enforced the day after Labor Day. Read the complete story.

IU Names New Cardiology Institute Director
Inside Indiana Business, Aug. 22 -- Cardiologist Peng-Sheng Chen has been named the new director of the Indiana University School of Medicine's Krannert Institute of Cardiology and of the Division of Cardiology. He has also been named the first Medtronic Zipes Professor of Cardiology. Read the complete story.
