Indiana youth drug use continues to decline, pipe use increases -- Drug use among Indiana adolescents continues to decline, according to results from the 17th annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University Bloomington. Pipe and cigar use, however, have increased, and the study points to increases in binge drinking, too. Read the complete story.
Can exercise be bad for you? Tune in to Sound Medicine -- Aug. 25 and 26, on Sound Medicine, a potential side effect of exercise will be discussed by Michael Miller, M.D., the lead author of a new study by cardiologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who found that in some cases, exercise can cause high blood pressure and put the heart at risk. Undergraduate Research Scholarship Program begins second year -- Twenty-seven Indiana University freshmen join five sophomores in an educational journey this fall as recipients of the Undergraduate Research Scholarship at Indiana University Bloomington. The scholarship, now in its second year, is distinctive in that it features four years of undergraduate research, with students and their faculty mentors working side-by-side. IU Dental School to Use Grant to Treat Low-Income Children -- IU School of Dentistry pediatric dentist Dr. Judith Chin is the principal investigator on a grant that will be used in the months ahead by the school's Department of Pediatric Dentistry to provide comprehensive oral health services to economically disadvantaged children. Second Circle of Life IU Mini Marathon and 5K set for Sept. 8; Race proceeds used to create scholarships for cancer survivors -- IU Circle of Life, a not-for-profit philanthropy organized by Indiana University students, is making final preparations for its second mini marathon on the IU Bloomington campus on Sept. 8. IU makes security improvements
WTHR 13, Aug. 22 -- IU has stepped up security, partially in response to the mass shooting at Virginia Tech earlier this year. Six of eleven dorms are now outfitted with card access entry, meaning only those who live there can get in. IU has also improved its closed-circuit TV system. Read the complete story.

Indiana Daily Student, Aug. 23 -- While other students at IU went on vacation or took classes over the summer, seniors Mike MacDonald and Ben Oprinovich spent their time filling out paperwork for Indiana and the Internal Revenue Service. They weren't in any legal trouble. Instead, they were en route to gaining a trademark for their T-shirt that is being distributed around campus with the slogan, "Win it for Hep," in honor of the football team's late coach, Terry Hoeppner. IUN bans campus smokes
Gary Post-Tribune, Aug. 22 -- Students took drags on their cigarettes on Indiana University Northwest's campus Tuesday, the day after a smoking ban officially started. But those days are numbered. Signs indicating the campus is smoke-free have been posted, giving students notice of the new policy, and the ban will be enforced the day after Labor Day. Read the complete story.
IU Names New Cardiology Institute Director
Inside Indiana Business, Aug. 22 -- Cardiologist Peng-Sheng Chen has been named the new director of the Indiana University School of Medicine's Krannert Institute of Cardiology and of the Division of Cardiology.
