Erin E. Carlson and Sara E. Skrabalak, assistant professors of chemistry at IU Bloomington, are among the 11 recipients in 2012 of Cottrell Scholar awards, a highly selective program that recognizes early-career researchers and promotes outstanding teaching. Carlson also has been awarded a 2012 National Science Foundation Faculty CAREER Award, the foundation's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty.

Chemists at Indiana University Bloomington have designed a molecule that binds chloride ions -- but can be conveniently compelled to release the ions in the presence of ultraviolet light. Reporting in the Journal of the American Chemical Society today (online), IU Bloomington chemist Amar Flood and Ph.D. student Yuran Hua explain how they designed the molecule, how it works and, just as importantly, how they know it works.

Two new teaching awards related to sustainability and environmental literacy -- the Sustainability Course Development Fellowships and the Sustainability and Environmental Literacy Leadership Award -- have been awarded to IU Bloomington faculty by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.
