In accepting the honor from the Indiana University Bloomington Department of Biology, Schumacher will deliver the talk, "Structural mechanisms of multidrug resistance and multidrug tolerance," on Wednesday, March 25, at 4 p.m. in Myers Hall 130 on the Bloomington campus. A reception for Schumacher will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Schumacher began her professional career at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, and has already amassed more than 50 publications. Among her areas of interest is the regulation of processes that influence the separation of DNA strands for the purpose of transcription (expression of genes).

Faculty, students, and alumni recommend speakers to the Joan Wood Lecture Series selection committee, which included biologists Viola Ellison and Laura Hurley and Department of Biology Development Officer Kathy Wyss. Past Joan Wood Lecture honorees have included MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Nicole King and Eugenie Scott, director of the National Center for Science Education.

The Joan Wood Lecture Series provides a forum for undergraduates to interact with women in science-related careers. Designed to encourage undergraduate women to pursue advanced degrees in science, the series showcases the many career opportunities available to science majors. Before her death in 1990, Dr. Wood was a strong advocate of women in the sciences and remained active in educational programs within the IU Bloomington Department of Biology. Memorial contributions made in her honor helped establish this lecture series.
