IU's African American Dance Company to present its 35th annual spring concert

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's African American Dance Company will host its 35th Annual Spring Concert Saturday (April 4) at 8 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., in downtown Bloomington.
Continuing with the African American Arts Institute's theme, "Looking Back -- Pressing Forward," the dance company has revamped the choreography to include a wider scope of African-influenced movement with different dance styles and influences.
The human condition in the African diaspora remains at the center of the dance company's stories. They include "Danzas Animadas," which connects Caribbean, contemporary modern dance and African derived movements influenced by the Moorish sound of Flamenco and Bomba with a speech by Che Guevara speaking to the theme of "Yes We Can." The Collaboration 2009 pieces explore the theme of the Constitution of the United States.
The African American Dance Company is directed by Iris Rosa, an associate professor in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies.
Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $7 for students (with valid ID) and children.
