Five IU graduates recognized with Stahr Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Five Indiana University Bloomington graduates have been presented with the Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award in recognition of their outstanding leadership qualities.

Receiving the awards are Gail Goldberg of St. Louis, Mo.; Aimee Herring of Granger, Ind.; Erin Ransford of Wheaton, Ill.; Christine Stejskal of Carmel, Ind.; and Edward Vargas of Von Ormy, Texas.

IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm presented the awards at a recent ceremony in Bloomington. The award, established in 1966 by IU president Elvis J. Stahr, is given each year to three to five IU Bloomington seniors who have distinguished themselves as outstanding students and leaders.

Below is more information on each award recipient:

-- Goldberg was a social-studies education major. Her activities at IU included two years as a peer instructor of an introduction-to-college course in the Collins Living Learning Center residence hall and one summer as a resident assistant for the Intensive Freshman Seminar.

-- Herring was a double major in political science and business legal studies. She founded Students for Improving Disability Awareness, a student organization at IU Bloomington, and worked at IU's Disabled Student Services as a van coordinator, scheduling and coordinating transportation for students with disabilities.

-- Ransford was a health administration major who served as president of the National Residence Hall Honorary and as chancellor's adviser to undegraduate leadership programs. She is a past president of the Foster residence halls student government.

-- Stejskal was an elementary education major. She served as the vice president of member development and as the vice president of scholarship in her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. In the Student Alumni Association, her roles included director of events, vice president of internal relations and director of membership.

-- Vargas was a public affairs major who founded the Indiana Latino Collegiate Leadership Conference, which focuses on student empowerment and higher education. He is also a member of IU's Volunteers for Minority Recruitment, which seeks to increase IU's minority student enrollment.
