Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie made a surprise announcement, stating that the university would match contributions to IU East's campus beautification initiative up to $50,000.

"We have received tremendous support from President McRobbie and Indiana University as we have worked to grow this campus and have an even greater impact in this region," Paydar said. "This is yet another example. Now, donations made by community members and alumni will have double the impact thanks to the match from IU."

The celebration was held on the lawn of Springwood Hall. The public event replaced a traditional installation ceremony for Chancellor Paydar. Given the state of the economy, Paydar chose to forgo the pomp and circumstance -- and expense -- of a traditional ceremony. Instead, Paydar is designating these funds for a campus beautification initiative to have a more lasting impact on the campus and community.

IU East is well underway with the initiative. With nearly 100 contributions to date, the project has provided for the planting of more than 90 new trees throughout the inner campus.

Paydar, students, faculty and staff also recently broke ground on the IU East Community Garden to promote environmental sustainability. Plans also call for the creation of sculpture garden with works from student, faculty, regional and national artists.
