BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's presence at the 2009 Indiana State Fair is focused on Hoosier health.

IU has partnered with Clarian Health to offer free health screenings every day of the fair, which runs Aug. 7-23, in the Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion, located next to Expo Hall. This is IU's fourth consecutive year at the Indiana State Fair.

"Indiana University is pleased to partner with Clarian Health at this year's Indiana State Fair," said Valerie Peña, IU's executive director and chief of staff for the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations. "This partnership gives students in our numerous health fields the opportunity to provide an important service to the attendees of the State Fair as well as allowing Indiana University to have a presence for the entire 17 days of the fair. In addition, IU will also have a booth in the Toyota Expo Hall, giving the university twice the exposure while spending a fraction of the dollars as in previous years. It's truly a great partnership opportunity for the university."

Several IU schools are assisting with free health screenings throughout the 2009 Indiana State Fair, including the IU School of Medicine; IU School of Nursing; School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; and the IUPUI School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, which are all working with Clarian Health to assist with a wide variety of free health screenings.

Each day, IU faculty, along with staff from Clarian Health, will be in the Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion conducting free blood pressure checks, cholesterol and HDL fingersticks screenings, functional movement screenings and obstructive sleep apnea screenings, and more. There will also be demonstrations on healthful food, Wii games and prizes. The Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion will be open each day of the fair from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and free health screenings will be provided from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The School of HPER's Department of Applied Health Science will be at the fair Aug. 10-11 with a table focusing on food. The dietetics program will host a food frequency dietary intake screening and provide information about appropriate food portion sizes and edible landscaping.

"With 13 schools and one college, IU is a treasure trove of expertise in many areas of life," said Victoria Getty, director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics. "The School of HPER's Department of Applied Health Science will be focusing on a topic that touches everyone's life -- food. This, as well as the other outreach activities from other IU schools at the fair, represent an investment in Hoosier health that is backed by the expertise and commitment of IU faculty, staff and students."

A special screening will be provided each day, such as vision screenings Aug. 10, blood glucose screenings Aug. 18 and depression screenings Aug. 14. Check the full schedule online (https://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/11503.html), which also includes a map and photos of past years at the fair. Those who participate in the health screenings will be given prizes including IU drawstring backpacks and tubes of lip balm with SPF 15.

In addition, IU will be giving fairgoers free promotional items and printed universitywide information at the IU table in the Learn More Indiana booth within the Toyota Expo Hall located by Gate 1A. Those who visit the booth can register to win an IU Kelley School of Business backpack. One winner will be announced each day of the fair from 7 to 9 p.m. IU is also sponsoring a daily shuttle for fairgoers who will receive a schedule of the free health screenings in the Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion.
