Linder, an attorney and former state legislator from Shelby County, replaces Thomas A. Morrison as IU's chief liaison to the Statehouse. Morrison was promoted to vice president for capital projects and facilities last month.

Linder will form a state relations team with John Grew, who was recently promoted to the position of executive director of state relations and policy analysis. Grew, a former senior fiscal analyst with the House Ways and Means Committee and executive assistant to the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon, works with IU fiscal staff and the president's cabinet to coordinate the development of legislative proposals and biennial appropriations requests.

The team will serve as the university's primary representatives to all state departments and agencies as well as the Indiana General Assembly.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie expressed enthusiasm for the new state relations team.

"The experience and expertise that Jeff Linder and John Grew have will give IU a strong and effective voice in the Statehouse," McRobbie said.

Linder represented portions of Bartholomew, Rush and Shelby counties for 10 years in the House of Representatives until the year 2000. A Republican, Linder held several leadership positions, including Republican caucus chairman, Republican whip and chairman of the Ethics Committee.

"Jeff has earned the respect and trust of Indiana lawmakers on both sides of the aisle from his years of service as an elected representative in the House and later as an advocate for higher education and health care organizations," McRobbie said. "He knows how to navigate the legislative budgetary process, and he knows what information lawmakers require to make well informed decisions. Because of his in-depth knowledge of both higher education and health care enterprises, he was the ideal fit for this important position."

Linder said he is honored to be chosen for the post.

"Under President McRobbie's leadership, Indiana University is undergoing many positive changes that will be of benefit to all Hoosiers, and I am delighted to be able to make a contribution to this effort," Linder said.

Linder will start Sept. 1. He will report to Mike Sample, vice president for public affairs and government relations.

After leaving the legislature, Linder joined Ball State University and served for six years as its associate vice president for government relations. In 2006, he moved to Clarian Health Partners Inc., where he served as vice president for government affairs. In both positions, he was the organization's primary advocate and representative during sessions of the Indiana General Assembly.

Linder earned a bachelor's degree from Ball State University in history and political science and graduated from the Indiana University School of Law -- Indianapolis in 1975.

He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps from 1975-78 and later in the Naval Reserve, from which he retired with the rank of lieutenant commander. He served as Shelby County Prosecuting Attorney from 1979-82 and also operated a private law practice there for many years.

He and his wife, Pamela, a first-grade teacher, live in Waldron, where they also own and operate a farm. They have three grown sons.
