Indiana University enrollment reaches record 107,160

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University set enrollment records this fall for the university as a whole and for several campuses, according to official fall 2009 census figures released today.
A record 107,160 students were enrolled in Indiana University -- a 5.3 percent increase from the previous record set a year ago, when enrollment topped 100,000 for the first time.
Also, the number of credit hours in which IU students were enrolled set a new record at 1,250,480.5, up 5.7 percent from last year.
Record numbers of students are enrolled at IU Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU East, IU South Bend and IU Southeast, and a record number of IU students are enrolled at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
Also, IU Kokomo and IU Northwest saw double-digit increases, with the biggest percentage increase coming at IU East with 19.5 percent. IU Kokomo had a record number of total credit hours at 29,361 from 28,867 in 1992; a record total of full-time students at 1,595 up from 1,453 in 2005; and a record number of minority students with 283, up 9.5 percent from 228 in 2008.
All IU campuses set records for the number of credit hours in which students were enrolled, an indication more students are attending college full-time. Student numbers increased at every campus. Several campuses set records for enrollment of students from under-represented minorities.
Across the university, enrollment increased by 4.9 percent for undergraduates, 3.4 percent for graduate students, and 2.3 percent in professional schools. Numbers increased for all undergraduate class levels: freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors. Enrollment grew by 5.7 percent for Indiana residents and 4.1 percent for nonresidents.
Enrollment increased by 10.8 percent for African American students, 9.4 percent for Asian American students, and 10.9 percent for Hispanic students, setting records for all three categories.
Enrollment highlights by campus
IU Bloomington: Enrollment reached a record 42,347, surpassing last year by 4.9 percent. Enrollment increased by 15 percent for graduate students and 2.9 percent for undergraduates, while professional enrollment held steady. Records were set for African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic, international, and white non-international students.
IUPUI: Enrollment reached 30,383, up 0.3 percent from last year. Numbers increased for undergraduate and professional students; graduate enrollment declined 11.9 percent with the move of the Kelley Direct online program to Bloomington. African American enrollment grew by 4.3 percent and Hispanic enrollment by 8.8 percent, the latter setting a record.
IU East: East set records for head count, at 2,924, and credit hours. Enrollment increased for every undergraduate class level and for graduate students, for males and females, and for residents and nonresidents. African American enrollment grew by 16.2 percent. Reciprocity students from Ohio increased by 32.4 percent.
IU Kokomo: Enrollment grew by 11.2 percent to 2,992, and credit hours set a record. Enrollment increased for both undergraduates and graduate students. Records were set for African American and Hispanic students.
IU Northwest: Enrollment increased by 16 percent to 5,560. Enrollment increased for all undergraduate grade levels, for graduate students, and for male and female students. Records were set for African American, Asian American and Hispanic students.
IU South Bend: Enrollment grew 8.8 percent to a record 8,394 students, and credit hours also set a record. Enrollment increased for all levels of undergraduates but decreased for graduate students. African-American and Hispanic enrollment set records.
IU Southeast: Enrollment increased 5.5 percent to a record 6,840. Numbers increased for graduate students and all class levels of undergraduates. Reciprocity enrollment for students from Kentucky grew 14.3 percent. African American, American Indian, Asian American and Hispanic enrollment set records.
IPFW: IU enrollment at Fort Wayne increased 11.1 percent to a record 7,720. Graduate enrollment declined, but graduate credit hours increased. Records were set for enrollment of African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic and white students. (Note: IPFW is administered by Purdue University. While these numbers are accurate for IU enrollment on this campus, Purdue officially reports them.)
