IU Alumni Association to launch yearlong 150th anniversary celebration
The Indiana University Alumni Association will launch a yearlong celebration of its 150th birthday at a gala event in Indianapolis on Friday (Dec. 12). All eight IU campuses, alumni clubs around the world, constituent societies and affiliate groups will host events in 2004 to commemorate the anniversary.
Former IUAA Chairwoman Sandy Obremskey of Lebanon, Ind., has coordinated a committee of alumni volunteers and staff that has planned the celebration.
Throughout 2004, the IUAA's Web site, https://www.alumni.indiana.edu, will feature weekly alumni profiles. Additionally, the Indiana Alumni Magazine will publish articles related to the history of the association. The January/February issue will contain a pullout timeline, based on research conducted by retired IUAA Associate Executive Director Janet Shirley. Shirley spent more than a year writing a book about the association's service since 1854. The book will be published in mid-2004.
The IUAA will ask Indiana's governor and the mayors of all major cities in each of Indiana's 92 counties to proclaim Aug. 2, 2004, as Indiana University Alumni Association Day. IU alumni worldwide will be asked to wear the color crimson on that day.
For the past 150 years, countless alumni volunteers, led by 11 association chief executives, have served IU and its alumni. During its century-and-a-half of existence, the IUAA has launched the IU Foundation, IU Varsity Club, IU Sports Network and Hoosiers for Higher Education.
As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations with more than 450,000 living graduates, the IUAA strives to connect and engage alumni through programs, services and communications. For more information, visit https://www.alumni.indiana.edu or call 800-824-3044.
