The conference will focus on the topic of comparative effectiveness research, which provides and disseminates information on the relative strengths and weaknesses of various medical therapies. As part of the nearly $800 billion federal program created through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $1.1 billion has been allocated for comparative effectiveness research.

"It has the potential to create major changes for all organizations in the life sciences value chain -- manufacturers of drugs and devices, suppliers and service providers, payers, hospitals, physicians and patients," said Larry Davidson, founding director of the Center for the Business of Life Sciences and the W. Michael and William D. Wells Life Sciences Faculty Fellow in the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.

The conference will examine the policy and implementation issues relating to comparative effectiveness research, including how Indiana life sciences firms will be impacted and may take advantage of it. Other policy issues that to be discussed include who pays for it, and how the United States can learn from similar research activities in other countries.

The conference will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Cook Medical World Headquarters, 750 Daniels Way, in Bloomington. The registration fee for the conference is $70. Other events in the series will take place Feb. 26 and May 14 in Indianapolis.

Registration is available online at https://www.kelley.iu.edu/CBLS/conferences/registration/page16551.html or by contacting Roxie Glaze at the Kelley School at 812-855-9210 or rglaze@indiana.edu.
