Trustees approve appointment of Cronin as dean of SLIS

Indiana University trustees today (Jan. 30) approved the appointment of Blaise Cronin as dean of the School of Library and Information Science. His appointment is effective on July 1.

Cronin previously was dean of the school from 1991 to spring 2003. He has been Rudy Professor of Information Science since 1999.

"I'm delighted Blaise has agreed to return as dean. He took over a strong school in 1991 and made it even stronger," said Kenneth Gros Louis, IU Bloomington interim chancellor. "Blaise's leadership is acknowledged across the campus and his voice carries more weight with other administrators than the size of his school would suggest."

Debora Ralf Shaw has served as interim dean of the school since Cronin's departure. She remains a professor of library and information science and will continue to serve as associate dean in the school.

"I know from many faculty in SLIS that Ralf Shaw did an excellent job as interim dean. On behalf of the campus and university I thank her for that," said Gros Louis.

Cronin has earned doctorate degrees in information science and social sciences and a master's degree in library science from The Queens University of Belfast. His work is widely published in areas such as informetrics, scholarly communication and citation analysis.

In other action, trustees approved an average housing rate increase of 3.67 percent at IUPUI for the 2004-05 academic year. Rates for campus apartments will increase by 3 percent and graduate townhomes and the Ball Residence Hall by 4 percent. For example, a two-bedroom campus apartment will be $613 per person per month for a 12-month lease and $681 per person per month for a nine-month lease. In Ball Hall, the rate for a single room will increase from $1,277 per semester to $1,328 per semester.
