The Feb. 27 concert at the campus Center for the Performing Arts will be conducted by Stephen W. Pratt, director of the Department of Bands and chair of the Department of Wind Conducting at the Jacobs School of Music.

The program includes a number of works designed to highlight the virtuosity, nuance and tonal sophistication of the contemporary wind ensemble, including Festivities by P. Q. Phan, Jacobs associate professor of composition.

The featured soloist will be Jacobs Professor Linda Strommen in the first performance of a new work by composer Eric Ewazen. Strommen commissioned Concerto for Oboe and Wind Ensemble for performance with the Jacobs School ensemble.

The Wind Ensemble is one of the leading ensembles in the Jacobs School. It performs the most outstanding literature of the wind band medium, including music for both chamber winds and large ensemble.

The ensemble has premiered many works for wind band by internationally recognized composers and has performed many times at national and international venues, including appearances at the American Bandmasters Association national convention, the Japan Bandmasters Association convention, the College Band Directors National Association divisional and national conferences, the Music Educators National Conference national conference, and Indiana Music Educators Association conferences, as well as the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.

Alumni of the Jacobs School and the Wind Ensemble currently perform in many of the leading professional orchestras around the world, as well as in the top United States military bands. Others are faculty members in college and university music departments across the nation and distinguish themselves by teaching music in public schools.
