IU Alumni Association to present 2009 President's Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Alumni Association will honor eight alumni with the 2009 IUAA President's Award for volunteer service to IU and their local communities. The awards will be presented Friday, Dec. 4, during a ceremony at Scholars Hall at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel in Indianapolis.
Established in 1993, the President's Award is the highest award given by the Alumni Association to a volunteer leader. This year's recipients are: Daniel Michael Bade of St. John, Ind.; Clarence Wayne Boone Sr. of Gary, Ind.; Michael B. Engels of Decatur, Ind.; P. Nicholas Kellum of Mooresville, Ind.; Amanda Lynn Musgrave of Kokomo, Ind.; Mary Beth Ryan of Plymouth, Ind.; the Rev. Mark D. Wesler of Westfield, Ind.; and Jenny Wolf of Borden, Ind.
"The IUAA President's Award recognizes and honors the outstanding volunteers who go above and beyond to serve the Indiana University Alumni Association," said Tom Martz, president and CEO of the IUAA. "They have all assisted in leading the way to provide opportunities for fellow alumni and friends to stay connected with their alma mater and helped us to strengthen the bond of our alumni with the university. For that, we are most appreciative and are delighted to recognize their efforts."
About the 2009 President's Award recipients
Daniel Michael Bade
Daniel Michael Bade
Daniel Bade earned his bachelor's degree in biological sciences in 1974 and doctorate in dental surgery in 1978, both from IU. He attended IU Bloomington for his undergraduate degree and IUPUI for his DDS degree.
A dentist with a private practice in St. John, Ind., Bade has taught dental courses at several universities, including the IU School of Dentistry Auxiliary Program at IU Northwest. He is a longtime supporter of fundraising efforts of the School of Dentistry and of the school's Career Day. A lifetime member of the IUAA, Bade served from 1982 to 1984 as the president of the Northwest Indiana Chapter -- now known as the Lakeshore (Ind.) Chapter. He also served on the IUAA's Executive Council as the School of Dentistry representative from 1983 to 1989.
Bade lives in St. John, Ind., and has two daughters.
Clarence Wayne Boone Sr.
Clarence Wayne Boone Sr.
A retired physician, Clarence Boone Sr. earned his bachelor's degree from IU in 1953 with a major in anatomy and physiology. He attended IU Bloomington. Boone completed his doctorate of medicine at the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1956. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology from 1964 to 2000 in Gary, Ind.
Boone is a co-founder and former national president of the IU Neal-Marshall Alumni Club. He served as the IUAA's volunteer national chairman in 1998. Boone, a lifetime member of the IUAA, also served on the IUAA's Executive Council for more than a decade. A member of the IU Northwest Chancellor's Society, he was a member of the IU Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2007. IU presented Boone its Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2003.
Boone and his wife, Blanche (Lane), BS'52, reside in Gary and have two living children and six grandchildren.
Michael B. Engels
Michael B. Engels
Michael Engels earned his master of business administration degree from IU in 1995. A financial adviser at Edward Jones in Portland, Ind., he attended IPFW.
Engels served on the IPFW Alumni Board from 1999 to 2007. As president of the board from 2004 to 2006, he helped to grow the Mastodon Roast -- a major IPFW alumni event -- from about 100 attendees to more than 300. Engels also launched an effort to group board members into teams to take on tasks such as increasing membership in the Alumni Association. As a graduate of the Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences at IPFW, Engels volunteered for service on the school's Alumni Advisory Council. He helped to plan events, encourage philanthropy, and coordinate the Business School's Distinguished Alumni Award at Commencement.
Engels and his Wife, Joan (Esmer), BS'91, live in Decatur, Ind., and have three children.
P. Nicholas Kellum
P. Nicholas Kellum
A three-time graduate of IU, Nick Kellum earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1967, a Master of Science degree in physical education in 1971, and a Doctorate of Education in higher education in 1986. He attended IU Bloomington.
Kellum, retired dean of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI, began his career at IUPUI in 1969. Early on, he served as the campus's first athletics director. Following a year as acting dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, Kellum began in 1978 as permanent dean and continued in that role until his retirement in 2009. He oversaw construction of the IU Natatorium and the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium. For his service to IUPUI, Kellum received the campus's Maynard K. Hine Award in 2008.
Kellum, a lifetime member of the IUAA, and his wife, Lori (Hefner), BS'86, live in Mooresville, Ind., and have two sons.
Amanda Lynn Musgrave
Amanda Lynn Musgrave
Amanda Musgrave earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from IU in 2002. She attended IU Kokomo.
A member of the IU Kokomo Alumni Association and on its board of directors since 2006, Musgrave currently serves as vice president of the board. She was instrumental in creating the IUKAA's New Professionals Conference, which gives young alumni professional advice as they embark upon their career paths. Musgrave is a strong supporter of the annual Old Ben 5K Run/Walk, which supports the Alumni Association's scholarship fund. She has also taken the lead in developing and implementing an international festival to be hosted by the IUKAA in 2010 in a partnership event with the Ivy Tech Alumni Association. This will be IUKAA's first partnership event with Ivy Tech.
Musgrave works as marketing director at McGonigal Buick Cadillac GMC and Button Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Kokomo, Ind. She and her son live in Kokomo.
Mary Beth Ryan
Mary Beth Ryan
Mary Beth Ryan, assistant director of alumni relations at Culver (Ind.) Academies and director of the Culver Parents Association, graduated in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in general studies. She attended IU South Bend. From 2004 to 2006, Ryan was executive director of the Mishawaka (Ind.) Business Association.
She currently serves as a member at large on the IUAA Executive Council. A lifetime member of the IUAA, Ryan is president of the Marshall County Alumni Chapter of the IUAA and a member of the IU Parents Association Advisory Board. She served the IU South Bend Alumni Association as president, past president, and as a member of the board of directors. From 2004 to 2006, Ryan was a member of the IU South Bend Chancellor's Advisory Board.
Ryan and her husband, Patrick, BA'85, MBA'04, live in Plymouth, Ind., with their two children.
Rev. Mark D. Wesler
Mark D. Wesler
The Rev. Mark Wesler earned his Bachelor of General Studies degree from IU in 1988. He attended IU East.
Wesler served on the IU East Alumni Association board of directors from 2000 to 2006. He was president of the board from 2005 to 2006. Wesler was ticket sales coordinator for IUEAA's Get Away Weekend program and was a top seller of Alumni Association memberships at the campus's annual Senior Shindig. For a number of years, he delivered the invocation at the campus's Commencement ceremony. Although Wesler moved from the Richmond area in 2006, he has remained a supporter of IU East and makes regular visits to the campus. In 2008, he began a three-year term as an at-large member of the IUAA's Executive Council.
Wesler, a life member of the IUAA, is senior pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield, Ind. He and his wife, Brenda, live in Westfield and have three children and four grandchildren.
Jenny Wolf
Jenny Wolf
Jenny Wolf, director of university communications and special assistant to the chancellor at IU Southeast, earned her bachelor's degree in 2000 with a major in communication and speech. She attended IU Southeast. Previously, she was the director of the campus's IT Support and Communication.
Wolf also previously served as interim director of the IU Southeast Alumni Affairs Office. In that role, her duties included organizing the campus's alumni events, Commencement, and managing alumni memberships. In addition, Wolf planned and implemented the Board of Trustees alumni reception at IU Southeast and coordinated the campus's Distinguished Alumni Award and Outstanding Alumni Awards luncheons. Under her leadership, the annual Fall Festival garnered the largest crowd ever, and an IU Alumni Day at the Kentucky State Fair was created, which contributed to a considerable increase in new alumni memberships. In 2008 Wolf received an Alumni Award of Excellence from the IU School of Arts and Letters.
Wolf and her husband, Mike, live in Borden, Ind., with their son.
