Indiana University sets spring enrollment records
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 21, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Spring semester enrollment at Indiana University Bloomington has topped 40,000 for the first time, and the campus continues to set records for minority and international students.
Some 40,211 students were enrolled in classes at IU Bloomington as of Jan. 15, the end of the first week of classes. They included 30,422 undergraduates, the first time that number surpassed 30,000.
Roger Thompson, vice provost for enrollment management, said the numbers show that IU Bloomington retains strong appeal for students and families even in difficult economic times. He said that is good news for campus and community, including businesses and their employees.
"Think of the positive economic impact that a growing IU has on Bloomington," Thompson said. "This record growth helps not just the university but the community as a whole."
IU Bloomington enrollment in the fall of 2009 was a record 42,347. College enrollment typically drops slightly in the spring semester.
For Indiana University's eight campuses, preliminary figures from the first day of classes show a total enrollment of 98,999, also a spring semester record. The number of students grew significantly from last year at IU East, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast.
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis would also have seen an increase in enrollment had an online graduate program not been moved from IUPUI to IU Bloomington this year. Credit hours were up at all IU campuses.
IU Bloomington set spring semester enrollment records for students who are African-American (1,766), Asian-American (1,732), Hispanic (1,048) and international (4,198). Add 115 Native American students, and 22 percent of campus enrollment is minority or international.
"The goal of making Indiana University more diverse is being achieved, and it's demonstrated by record enrollments in all these areas," Thompson said.
Spring enrollment at IU Bloomington increased by 1,612 students, or 4.2 percent, from the spring semester of 2009, with the biggest increase coming from graduate students. Students were enrolled in 528,326 credit hours, including 443,459 at the undergraduate level -- both new records for spring.
At other IU campuses, official spring figures will be released Jan. 26. Preliminary numbers include:
- IUPUI -- 28,522 students, down 0.2 percent from spring 2009; 324,182 credit hours, up 2.4 percent. However, when the transfer of an online graduate program to Bloomington from IUPUI is taken into account, true growth at IUPUI for the spring semester is up approximately 800 students or almost 3 percent.
- IU East -- 2,627 students, up 13.8 percent; 27,603 credit hours, up 17.2 percent
- IPFW -- 6,889 students, up 7.6 percent; 72,340 credit hours, up 8.5 percent
- IU Kokomo -- 2,746 students, up 10.6 percent; 27,383 credit hours, up 11.3 percent
- IU Northwest -- 5,013 students, up 12.3 percent; 52,486 credit hours, up 16.2 percent
- IU South Bend -- 7,575 students, up 9.1 percent; 72,837 credit hours, up 11 percent
- IU Southeast -- 6,319 students, up 5.4 percent; 63,829 credit hours, up 8.7 percent
