Part 2 of campus diversity initiative gets under way this week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Part 2 of an Indiana University Bloomington initiative to build a culturally literate and inclusive campus gets under way this week with a lecture and panel discussion on the theme "Reflection: Mapping Practices and Setting Priorities."

On Tuesday (March 2), Mary Howard-Hamilton and Kandace G. Hinton, faculty members in the Department of Educational Leadership at Indiana State University, will speak on "Moving Diversity Beyond Race to Multicultural Inclusiveness." The talk will be at 1 p.m. in the Dogwood Room of the Indiana Memorial Union.
On Thursday (March 4), the series will continue with a panel discussion featuring Bruce Jacobs, executive director of the IMU and IU Auditorium and executive officer of IU Auxiliary Services and Programs; Gary Sailes, a sport sociologist in Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; and Vicki Pappas, director of the Center for Planning and Policy Studies of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community. It will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the IMU Georgian Room.

The "reflection" events are part of ARC 2010! -- Attention, Reflection, Connection, Taking Steps Toward an Inclusive Campus -- an initiative that employs panel discussions, lectures, workshops and conversations to address diversity as a subject and process of intellectual inquiry that is informed by practice and that informs future practice.

The events that make up "Reflection: Mapping Practices and Setting Priorities" result from a recognition that many talented individuals are working to make IU Bloomington more inclusive, with some collaborating but others working in relative isolation. The events address the question: How can the campus formulate a plan for collective action through which individuals and units can become responsive to shared concerns and accountable to one another?
In Part 1 of the initiative, "Attention: Working Together to Address Challenges," participants learned that collective action requires structure and rules of participation that cannot be imposed from above but must be developed from the ground up. For Part 2, the workshops will identify existing resources and practices on campus and map knowledge of institutional relations, contributing to a holistic understanding of campus relations where diversity efforts are concerned.
