Two IU Bloomington students honored as Goldwater Scholars

Stephen Helms is one of IUB's two Goldwater Scholars.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington juniors Stephen Helms and Keith Turpin have been named Goldwater Scholars for the 2004-05 academic year.

Helms and Turpin were among 310 scholars selected by the Goldwater Foundation from a field of 1,113 mathematics, science and engineering students nationwide. The foundation awards one- and two-year scholarships to undergraduate sophomores and juniors on the basis of academic merit. The scholarship can be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Helms, who is from Washington, Ind., is interested in molecular cell biology. He will receive a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry and a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in mathematics next spring. He will be an undergraduate teaching intern in the fall, teaching an introductory biology course with IUB Professor of Biology Miriam Zolan. He plans to attend graduate school and study either biochemistry or structural biology.

Keith Turpin

Turpin is from Gary, Ind. He has a double major in physics and mathematics, and he is a member of IU's Science, Technology and Research Scholars Program. STARS gives a select group of science majors an opportunity to conduct research in a faculty laboratory setting. Turpin plans to attend graduate school and study experimental high energy particle physics. He is interested in investigating collisions between protons and antiprotons.

Goldwater Scholars have garnered the attention of post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 56 Rhodes Scholarships and 66 Marshall Awards.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established in 1986 in honor of Sen. Barry M. Goldwater to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
