2010 IU Energy Challenge gets under way
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 25, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The 2010 IU Energy Challenge begins today, with more than 14,000 students, faculty and staff participating in the four-week competition to reduce energy and water consumption.
All 11 residence halls, 26 Greek houses, and eight academic buildings will compete to achieve the greatest percent decrease in combined utility usage. This is the third year for the competition, which runs until April 22.
Participants can access their standings by visiting https://energychallenge.indiana.edu. The interactive Web site allows users to see weekly electricity and water consumption compared to a baseline average for their building.
This baseline represents the average consumption for the previous three years during the four weeks of the competition. The baseline remains static, meaning each year, competitors will have the advantage of measuring their percentage improvement in comparison to the original baseline.
During the 2009 Energy Challenge, student electricity and water savings were 59 percent and 83 percent greater, respectively, than savings in the 2008 Energy Challenge. Last year's challenge resulted in electrical savings of over 700,000 kilowatt-hours, equivalent to 700 average homes, and over 1.5 million gallons of water, about the equivalent of two Olympic-sized pools.
